31° scramble for Italian fighters in Lithuania
it 18 August two aircraft Eurofighter Typhoon Italians of the Task Force Air of Šiauliai have intercepted a Russian transport aircraft that crossed the Baltic airspace without having obtained the necessary permissions.
Redeployed fighters in Lithuania were activated with an order to scramble air operations command and control center (CAOC) NATO based in Uedem (Germany).
The two Typhoon Italians, in a few minutes, they intercepted and identified the aircraft in accordance with the procedures laid down by the Atlantic Alliance.
The scramble, In fact, It is precisely the operating activities consisting in quickly to activate a pair of fighter aircraft to intercept and identify unknown aircraft violating the airspace of the Alliance, in order to ensure the safety of the skies from any and/or potential threat.
Italian fighter jets are assuring since last January 1 the integrity of the airspace over the skies of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. The Italy is currently the only NATO Nation that has secured Interim Air Policing tasks in all 4 the Alliance's areas that need (Slovenia, Albania, Iceland and the Baltic States). The Air Policing is carried out within the area of responsibility of the operational command NATO ally (Allied Command Operations – ACO) at Brussels (Belgium) and is coordinated by the Air Command (Air Command) Ramstein in Germany.
