777 Partners founder pleads guilty to $500 million fraud scheme

Joshua Wander, co-founder and former chief executive of 777 Partners, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and securities fraud in the United States in a case involving more than $500 million in losses to the investment firm’s lenders and investors. The Miami-based private investment firm expanded into aviation, backing airlines including Flair Airlines and Bonza and announcing plans to acquire dozens of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

Wander entered his guilty plea on 15 October 2026 before US District Judge J. Paul Oetken in the Southern District of New York. According to the US Department of Justice (DOJ), the scheme involved misleading lenders and investors about 777 Partners’ financial position. Wander agreed to forfeit at least $500 million and is scheduled to be sentenced on 1 March 2027.

The case concerns how 777 Partners obtained and used financing as it expanded beyond its original business of underwriting and financing structured settlements. Prosecutors said Wander used restricted funds to cover acquisitions and other expenses, pledged assets that the firm had not purchased or had already pledged to other lenders, and directed employees to alter bank statements to conceal cash shortfalls.

Airline investments and Boeing 737 MAX 8 plans

777 Partners expanded its portfolio into aviation through investments in airlines, including Canadian carrier Flair Airlines and Australian low-cost carrier Bonza.

The indictment states that Wander purchased Flair Airlines in 2018 and that 777 Partners became a minority owner of Bonza in 2021. In March 2021, 777 Partners announced an agreement with Boeing to acquire 24 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, with purchase rights for a further 60. The indictment states that the aircraft were intended for deployment with Flair Airlines and Bonza.

The agreement was part of 777 Partners’ wider aviation strategy, which combined airline investments with plans to acquire aircraft for use by carriers in its portfolio. The announcement did not mean that all 24 aircraft had been delivered or that the additional 60 had been ordered unconditionally.

At the time, however, 777 Partners was facing financial pressure. According to the indictment, rising interest rates and increased competition in the structured settlement market had reduced the profitability of its core business, limiting its cash reserves and borrowing capacity.

Prosecutors alleged that Wander continued authorizing expenditure on new ventures despite warnings from employees and without sufficient funding or secured financing. By 2021, the firm routinely lacked sufficient funds to meet some operating expenses, cover payroll, service credit facilities or complete planned acquisitions, according to the indictment.

Allegations of misused funds and falsified records

777 Partners initially focused on financing structured settlements before expanding into sectors including aviation and professional sports.

According to the DOJ, Wander directed funds restricted by lenders for the structured-settlement business towards acquisitions and other expenses. Prosecutors said he pledged hundreds of millions of dollars in assets that 777 Partners had either never purchased or had already pledged to other lenders.

The DOJ also said Wander directed employees to digitally alter bank account statements to show millions of dollars in cash that the firm did not actually hold.

In 2021 and 2022, Wander raised more than $200 million from outside investors through preferred equity interests in 777 Partners and an affiliated entity. Prosecutors said he misrepresented the firm’s financial condition when seeking those investments.

In March 2022, Wander sought a $20 million loan and provided dozens of doctored bank statements to conceal the misappropriation of funds, including money spent on options trades, according to the DOJ.

The scheme began to unravel in March 2023, when a lender questioned whether assets had been pledged more than once. The DOJ said Wander blamed the issue on an error caused by the firm’s outdated computer system and subsequently assured the lender that the double-pledging had been inadvertent. Wander resigned as CEO in 2024.

Bonza’s reliance on 777 Partners

Bonza began operating scheduled flights in February 2023, serving domestic Australian routes with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The airline sought to establish a low-cost network connecting regional destinations, with 777 Partners providing its financial backing.

According to Bonza’s administrators, the airline was wholly reliant on funding from 777 Partners, its sole investor. That dependence became a critical issue when the airline’s aircraft leases were terminated, and its fleet was repossessed in April 2024.

Bonza suspended flights on 30 April 2024 and entered voluntary administration. It did not resume operations.

The administration report identified significant financial difficulties at the airline, including sustained trading losses and a substantial working capital deficit. The directors also attributed the abrupt interruption of the business to the repossession of its aircraft and the lack of sufficient capital.

Although the court documents describe the firm’s expansion into aviation and its financial difficulties, they do not establish that the fraud directly caused Bonza’s collapse. Separate Australian administration records show that Bonza relied on 777 Partners for funding and that the airline’s aircraft leases were terminated before it ceased operations.
