8th AF commander: AGM-183 could be a temporary measure while B-21 will fly in 2022
In a livestream event with AFA’s Mitchell Institute, the 8th Air Force commander Maj. Gen. Mark E. Weatherington, says the AGM-183 Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon could be a temporary measure for the service to experiment with concepts of operation.
Weatherington says a range of weapons in different size categories are being developed by the industry now.
He is also commander of the Joint Global Strike Operations Center and he told the audience that will fly “no earlier than ’22.”
Previsouly, it was reported that the new stealth bomber will make its maiden flight in December 2021.
On the topic of the Arsenal Plane, Weatherington poured cold water on two ideas that have been gaining traction: converting an airliner or using airlift aircraft to carry “palletized munitions.”
He argued that building a plane from scratch is a cheaper option.
