Alaska Airlines restores operations after second major IT outage of 2025
Alaska Airlines has resumed operations following an IT outage that caused a system-wide halt of its flights across the United States, marking the second such incident for the airline within just a few months of 2025.
In a statement issued on October 24, 2025, the airline announced that the ground stop had been lifted at 23:30 local Pacific time, with all operations fully restored.
Since the afternoon of October 24, 2025, the airline reported over 229 flight cancellations. Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 indicated that, due to the outage, there were 100 fewer Alaska Airlines aircraft in operation compared to the previous week.
“We are working to get our operations back on track as quickly and safely as possible,” the airline said. “Additional flight disruptions are likely as we reposition aircraft and crews throughout our network.”
Some passengers took to social media to voice their frustration over the disruptions. One traveler reported being on hold for almost five hours, while others criticized the airline’s response to the situation, pointing out ongoing service problems in recent months and questioning the accountability of executives.
“We appreciate the patience of our guests whose travel plans have been disrupted. We’re working to get them to their destinations as quickly as we can,” the carrier said, while advising passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
According to the airline, the outage began at around 15:30 local time on October 23, 2025, due to a failure at its primary data center.
“Alaska Airlines is experiencing an IT outage that has resulted in a systemwide ground stop of Alaska and Horizon Air flights across our network, causing delays and cancellations. The IT outage does not affect Hawaiian Airlines flights,” the airline said in an earlier statement.
Alaska Airlines mentioned that the IT outage has disrupted several of its key systems needed for its operations, clarifying that this was not a cybersecurity issue and is unrelated to any other events.
This marks the second IT outage to have impacted the airline this year. In July 2025, a similar outage caused flights to be halted for approximately three hours. The post Alaska Airlines restores operations after second major IT outage of 2025 appeared first on AeroTime.
