Malaysia Airlines, Tourism New Zealand partner to boost KL-Auckland route
Malaysia Airlines and Tourism New Zealand have signed a two-year strategic partnership aimed at driving travel demand and strengthening connectivity between Kuala Lumpur and Auckland.
The agreement, announced on May 5, 2026, brings together both organizations for an integrated marketing campaign targeting experience-driven travelers, from young professionals and group tourists to nature lovers and adventure seekers.
The campaign will showcase New Zealand’s landscapes, culture, and hospitality, highlighting everything from wellness retreats and coastal journeys to culinary exploration and outdoor adventures.
Direct link between Kuala Lumpur and Auckland
Malaysia Airlines operates 10 weekly flights on the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) -Auckland Airport (AKL) route using its A330neo aircraft. The airline said the service offers travelers convenient access to New Zealand with modern cabin features and enhanced comfort.
Bryan Foong, Chief Executive Officer of Airline Business at Malaysia Aviation Group, said the partnership reflects the growing ties between the two countries in tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchange. He noted that New Zealand’s concept of “manaakitanga”, a deeply rooted culture of welcome and care, “resonates strongly with our own promise of Malaysian Hospitality.”
“Together, we look forward to inspiring more travellers to discover the lifestyle, beauty, and warmth of New Zealand while unlocking new opportunities for tourism growth between our two nations,” Foong said.
Visitor numbers on the rise
Tourism New Zealand said arrivals from Malaysia have been growing steadily. As of February 2026, New Zealand welcomed 32,200 visitors from Malaysia over the past year, an 11.5% increase compared to the previous year.
Angela Blair, General Manager International at Tourism New Zealand, said the growth reflects the enduring appeal of New Zealand’s landscapes, culture, and experiences. She added that Malaysia Airlines’ increased capacity on the route has created more opportunities for travelers to make the journey.
“New Zealand cannot wait to welcome more visitors from Malaysia as they take the trip of a lifetime to visit our beautiful country,” Blair said.
