US President Donald Trump’s new Boeing 747-8 presidential aircraft has made its public debut, giving a clear look at long last at the red, white, dark blue and gold livery that will replace the Kennedy-era robin’s egg blue Air Force One paint scheme.
The former Qatari royal aircraft was unveiled June 19, 2026, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where Trump viewed the aircraft and spoke in front of the jet.
The aircraft was gifted by Qatar and has been converted for temporary use as a presidential transport while Boeing continues work on two new 747-8 aircraft being built for the Air Force One mission.
The new aircraft is known as the VC-25B Bridge aircraft. Any US Air Force aircraft carrying the president uses the call sign Air Force One.
The new livery keeps the traditional large “United States of America” titles along the fuselage, but replaces the familiar light blue and white look with a darker scheme. The aircraft has a dark blue underside, white upper fuselage, red throughline and gold accent stripe, along with a waving American flag on the tail.
Trump has pushed for years to replace the classic Air Force One livery, which dates back 64 years since it debuted in 1962. The updated design brings the presidential aircraft closer to the red, white and dark blue color palette Trump has long favored. The gold stripe is also consistent with Trump’s personal aircraft and broader design preferences.
“This is considered the world’s most luxurious plane,” Trump said at the unveiling. “When it was built, it was built at a level that will probably never be seen again.”
Trump signs VC-25 Bridge aircraft panelTrump said the aircraft is needed because some foreign leaders fly newer aircraft than the aging VC-25A fleet currently used by US presidents.
“These countries have a lot of respect for us, and yet they have a plane that’s much newer and much better. It’s a little ridiculous,” Trump said.
The two current presidential Boeing 747-200B aircraft entered service in 1990. One of those aircraft, tail number 29000, completed what Trump described as its final trip after returning from Europe on June 18, 2026. The aircraft is expected to be placed in a museum.
The other VC-25A, tail number 28000, is expected to continue flying alongside the newly converted 747-8 until the next-generation VC-25B aircraft are delivered.
The Qatar-supplied jet has drawn criticism since the Trump administration accepted it, with opponents questioning the ethics of receiving a luxury aircraft from a foreign government and raising security concerns about converting a previously owned foreign aircraft for presidential use.
Trump dismissed those criticisms and said it would be “stupid” to reject the aircraft.
The Air Force said the aircraft has been modified and flight-tested ahead of its entry into the presidential airlift fleet. The conversion work was carried out by L3Harris Technologies.
“The safety and security of the commander in chief is our highest priority,” Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink said in a statement quoted by Reuters. “From the beginning, we meticulously evaluated every requirement to accelerate delivery while maintaining the high standards expected of the presidential mission.”
The aircraft is expected to lead a July 4 flyover in Washington, DC, as part of events marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. The public debut follows the aircraft’s earlier emergence from the paint shop in Waco, Texas, where aviation photographers captured the first images of the finished livery before the aircraft was shown publicly at Joint Base Andrews.
Earlier plans called for the aircraft to be transferred to Trump’s presidential library foundation after its government service. But the final donation agreement reportedly did not include that stipulation, leaving the aircraft as a Defense Department asset unless the government later transfers it. Trump has said he does not plan to use the aircraft personally after leaving office. The post Photos: Trump Boeing 747 Air Force One makes long-awaited public debut appeared first on AeroTime.
