Chinese YY-20 tanker refuels Egyptian Rafale for first time

Egypt’s Armed Forces spokesperson published photographs on August 31, 2026, showing a People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) YY-20 tanker refueling an Egyptian Air Force Dassault Rafale during the Eagles of Civilization 2026 joint exercise. 

It is the first publicly documented instance of a Chinese tanker transferring fuel to a Western-built fighter. 

Eagles of Civilization 2026 is the second China-Egypt air exercise and is being conducted across several Egyptian air bases. Announcing the exercise on August 14, 2026, Chinese Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Senior Colonel Chen Xi said it would run from mid-August to early September 2026. 

The training covers air combat tactics, air superiority operations, combat search and rescue, and force employment drills. 

China deploys fighters, tankers and support aircraft to Egypt 

PLA-affiliated outlet China Military Bugle said the Chinese contingent arrived at an Egyptian air base on August 21, 2026, after flying more than 6,000 kilometers (3,700 miles) across two continents and four countries in close to nine hours. 

The deployed package includes J-16 fighters, YY-20A tankers, Y-20 transport aircraft, KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft, Y-9LG electronic warfare aircraft and Z-20 helicopters. Aircraft numbers have not been officially confirmed, and reported counts vary. 

The Egyptian Armed Forces post did not state when the refueling sortie took place. Participating forces have flown joint missions involving attacks on hostile targets and the protection of vital targets, the spokesperson said, as well as aerial refueling training. 

Egyptian Rafales train with Chinese J-16 fighters 

Egyptian Rafales are taking part in Eagles of Civilization for the first time in the 2026 edition, flying dissimilar air combat training against Chinese J-16s. 

The PLAAF fielded J-10C fighters during the inaugural exercise, held between April and May 2025. During that edition, a YY-20 refueled Egyptian MiG-29M/M2 fighters. 

The Egyptian Air Force does not operate aerial refueling aircraft of its own. Its mixed fighter fleet includes US F-16s, French Rafales and Russian MiG-29M/M2s. 

The PLAAF publicly acknowledged the YY-20, a tanker variant of the Y-20 airlifter, in July 2022. The aircraft is being introduced to expand China’s aerial refueling capacity beyond the three Soviet-designed Il-78 tankers acquired from Ukraine in 2011. 

The refueling demonstration comes as Egypt is reportedly considering a further expansion of its Rafale fleet. La Tribune reported on September 1, 2026, citing its sources, that Cairo had recently sent Dassault Aviation a request for proposal for 24 additional aircraft.
