Fiji Airways launches direct flights to Western Sydney ahead of WSI opening

Fiji Airways has announced the launch of direct flights between Nadi International Airport (NAN) and Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), becoming the first international carrier to connect Fiji with Sydney’s newest airport.

The service, set to begin on March 19, 2027, will operate three times a week on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays using the airline’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, adding more than 53,000 seats annually between the two destinations.

Fiji crosses one million visitors for the first time as Australia demand surges

The timing is no coincidence. Fiji has just broken the one million visitor mark over a 12-month period for the first time in its history, while also posting its highest-ever monthly arrivals in July 2026.

Australia remains Fiji’s largest source market, and the new route targets one of its fastest-growing regions.

Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Paul Scurrah said Western Sydney was a natural next step for the airline. He noted that the region is home to one of the largest Fijian communities outside Fiji, making the route about more than tourism. 

“It’s about making it easier for our people to stay connected to family and friends,” he said, “and for Fiji to keep growing as a destination the world wants to visit.”

Up to three daily flights between Fiji and Greater Sydney

The new WSI service will complement Fiji Airways’ existing twice-daily flights between Nadi and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), bringing the airline’s total capacity between Fiji and the Greater Sydney region to up to three flights per day, more than any other carrier on the route.

The schedule has been designed with weekend getaways in mind from both ends. 

Flight FJ 991 departs Nadi at 1910 local time and arrives at WSI at 2255 local time, while the return flight FJ 990 departs WSI at 2355 local time and arrives in Nadi at 0455 local time the following day. 

The early morning arrival into Nadi allows for onward connections within Fiji, as well as to Tonga, Samoa, and other destinations across the airline’s wider network.

WSI welcomes another carrier ahead of opening

WSI CEO Simon Hickey said the airline’s addition is another boost ahead of the airport’s passenger launch, now less than 60 days away. He noted that Western Sydney is home to more than 70% of Greater Sydney’s Fijian population, and that the new service delivers a direct connection for that community while also giving tourists more choice and flexibility to visit Fiji.
