Nigerian Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke signed a structural beam of this first helicopter, four years and five months after the $997 million Foreign Military Sale (FMS) was notified to Congress on April 14, 2022, and three years after Nigeria made its first payment in August 2023. Bell’s March 2024 production contract was valued at $455 million and initially scheduled for completion by July 2028; divided mechanically across 12 AH-1Zs, it equals $37.9 million per helicopter, although it also finances engineering, program management, and logistics. The larger $997 million FMS ceiling consists of $521 million in Major Defense Equipment and $476 million in other equipment and services, a 52.3%-47.7% split. It covers the 12 helicopters, 28 engines, 2,000 APKWS guidance sections, sensors, electronic warfare, training, spares, support, and assistance.
The procurement includes 28 T700-GE-401C engines, of which 24 are installed in the 12 helicopters and four spares. The spare pool consequently equals 16.7% of the requirement, or one spare engine per three aircraft. Nigeria is also acquiring 2,000 APKWS guidance sections, equivalent mathematically to 166.7 per helicopter, plus M197 20 mm cannon equipment, Target Sight Systems, Night Vision Cueing Displays, AN/AVS-9 night vision equipment, electronic warfare systems, communications, GPS/SPS navigation and mission-planning equipment. The case also covers engine containers, spare and repair parts, tools, test equipment, training equipment, publications, engineering and logistics support, and assistance with construction of operating facilities. Another $25 million, 2.5% of the $997 million ceiling, funds the Armed Forces of Nigeria Air Ground Integration work, including targeting procedures compliant with international humanitarian law and the law of armed conflict. Implementation includes mobile training teams, repeated U.S. government and contractor visits over five years, and roughly three contractor representatives resident in Nigeria for two years.
Each AH-1Z has two crew members, two T700-GE-401C engines rated at 1,800 shp each (3,600 shp combined uninstalled output), an 18,500 lb (8,391 kg) maximum gross weight, and a 5,764 lb (2,615 kg) maximum useful load. Internal fuel capacity is 412.5 U.S. gallons, or 1,561 liters. Bell lists the helicopter’s maximum speed at 200 KIAS (370 km/h), cruise speed at 139 KTAS (257 km/h), and combat radius at 131 nmi (243 km). The aircraft uses four-bladed main and tail rotors, a four-axis automatic flight control system, and folding main rotor blades derived from its shipboard requirement. The combat radius is more useful for Nigerian mission planning, because it incorporates an armed mission rather than simple transit: Bell’s reference configuration for the AH-1Z includes eight Hellfires, fourteen 70 mm rockets, 650 rounds of 20 mm ammunition, 120 expendable countermeasures and a 20-minute fuel reserve. Actual radius and time on station will consequently vary with weapon load, temperature, altitude, loiter requirement, and reserve fuel.
The AH-1Z combines its nose-mounted M197 three-barrel 20×102 mm cannon with six external weapon stations for guided and unguided weapons. Nigeria’s quantified precision-weapon purchase includes 2,000 APKWS guidance sections for laser-guided 70 mm rockets. That stock corresponds to 100 combat sorties if 20 APKWS are fired per sortie, 200 sorties at ten per sortie, or 400 at five per sortie; measured by monthly expenditure, 50 rounds per month would exhaust the initial quantity in 40 months, 100 per month in 20 months, and 200 per month in ten months, excluding training expenditure and replenishment. The AH-1Z can also employ AGM-114 Hellfire and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, but Nigeria’s FMS package does not specify a Hellfire allocation, so aircraft carriage capacity should not be treated as Nigerian inventory. The distinction matters because the confirmed 2,000-round APKWS purchase defines the initial depth of Nigeria’s principal precision-guided air-to-ground weapon stock for the Viper.
Nigeria is also building a dedicated avionics and survivability inventory for the fleet. The AH-1Z’s Target Sight System combines electro-optical and infrared sensing with laser functions for target detection, tracking, and designation, while the Optimized TopOwl helmet-mounted sight and display supports day and night cueing. The survivability suite includes the AN/AAR-47 missile warning and laser detection system, AN/ALE-47 countermeasure dispenser, and AN/APR-39 radar warning receiver, providing warning against radar, missile, and laser threats and automatic or crew-directed dispensing of countermeasures. For instance, on December 19, 2023, Northrop Grumman received a $7.78 million modification for 32 H-1 tech-refresh mission computers for Nigeria. With two computers required per aircraft, 12 AH-1Zs need 24 installed units, leaving eight above the installed baseline, a 33.3% reserve. The contract averages $243,182 per computer when divided mechanically across 32 units, although that figure is not necessarily the hardware’s standalone price.
Training and sustainment must scale to the same 12-aircraft force. Bell received an approximately $18 million award in August 2026 for one AH-1Z flight-training device and an initial spares package, with completion planned for January 2029, producing one simulator for 12 helicopters. Because each AH-1Z requires two aircrew, simply assigning one complete crew to every aircraft requires 24 qualified personnel; 1.5 crews per aircraft would require 36, and two crews per aircraft 48. Those are force-generation calculations rather than Nigerian manning targets, but they illustrate why 12 delivered helicopters do not automatically provide 12 simultaneously deployable crews. Maintenance personnel must meanwhile sustain 12 airframes, 24 installed engines, four spare engines, 24 installed mission computers plus eight additional units, 12 Target Sight Systems, electronic warfare equipment, guns, rotor systems and transmissions. Nigeria and the U.S. H-1 program office were already working on facilities, integration and sustainment in February 2026, seven months before the first aircraft production began.
The AH-1Z will add another logistics chain to a Nigerian attack helicopter inventory already containing Russian Mi-24s/-35s and six Turkish T129 ATAKs, while the Nigerian Army is separately acquiring 12 MD 530F Cayuse Warriors. Nigeria will therefore support U.S., Turkish and Russian helicopters with different engines, avionics, weapons, maintenance qualifications, spare inventories and manufacturer support. The 12 AH-1Zs are numerically twice the Turkish acquisition, but their significance is better measured by their separate support burden than by fleet totals. The U.S. Marine Corps reduces that burden by operating the AH-1Z alongside the UH-1Y, with roughly 85% commonality between the two H-1 variants in components including engines, rotor systems, drivetrain, and avionics. Nigeria is not buying the UH-1Y, so this commonality will remain largely confined to its 12 Vipers rather than being distributed across a larger H-1 fleet.
