UK to support Saudi defensive operations in response to renewed Houthi attacks
The United Kingdom (UK) has agreed to assist Saudi Arabia with defensive operations in response to renewed Houthi attacks in the Gulf region.
On September 22, 2026, the UK government confirmed that in the face of “escalating violence” it will provide an Royal Air Force (RAF) Voyager air-to-air refueling aircraft.
The Ministry of Defense described both Saudi Arabia and Yemen as “long-standing partners” that “play a vital role in regional stability”.
The development comes after Houthi rebels advanced in Yemen earlier this month, capturing the Red Sea port city of Mocha and other sections of the country’s coastline.
RAFOn September 20, 2026, UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, their targeting of civilian sites, and the threat these attacks pose to security and stability in the region.
On September 22, 2026, Secretary of Defense Wes Streeting said: “The Houthis are a dangerous threat to regional stability and it is in the UK’s national economic and security interest that they do not succeed.”
He added: “We unequivocally condemn the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and are clear that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Yemen.”
In a statement the UK said that escalations in the Gulf region can have a “serious impact at home” with “increasing prices, disruption to energy supplies, and extra costs for British businesses”.

The support builds on the UK’s existing military contribution to Saudi Arabia’s air defense, including the deployment of air defense equipment and personnel helping to protect against missile and drone attacks.
The Houthi rebels are closely aligned with Iran which has itself been locked in a conflict with the US and Israel.
The conflict, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, has caused global oil prices to surge, affecting the health of many national economies around the world.
