Romanian airline Animawings files for insolvency, disposes of entire A220 fleet
Romanian private airline Animawings filed for insolvency at a court in Bucharest on September 30, 2026. Under this procedure, the airline will obtain a degree of court-supervised protection from its creditors as it attempts to straighten its financial situation.
As part of the restructuring process, the carrier also announced that it will cut its fleet from eight to two aircraft, by disposing of six Airbus A220-300 which it has leased since 2024. Animawings intends to retain only its two older A320 aircraft.
According to the airline owners, the decision is primarily motivated by recurring technical issues which have seen part of its A220 fleet grounded over the course of the last few months.
A report appeared on Romanian media outlet boardingpass.ro, however, claims that the airline is also in arrears to a handful of creditors, with several airports, in Romania and in Greece, having launched legal procedures to claim the money they are owed.
Animawings’ owners were also reported to be in conversation with investors to sell half of the business. This includes the investment arm of Banca Transilvania, Romania’s largest bank. However, according to those same media reports, it appears that the deal was never signed.
In the last few years, Animawings had been implementing a rather ambitious growth plan which saw the airline pivot from the charter market to a hybrid model, with an increasing number of scheduled operations, challenging flag carrier Tarom on a number of domestic and European routes.
While Animawings has stated its intention to remain in operation, it is expected that a large number of flights will be cancelled as a result of this significant downsizing, with many routes being dropped entirely.
