A Ukrainian Air Force Mirage 2000-5F reportedly destroyed a Russian S-8000 Banderol cruise missile over Ukraine using its internal 30 mm cannon, marking the first known case of this missile type being shot down by a Western fighter with gunfire. The engagement adds another interception option for French-supplied Mirage 2000s as Ukraine confronts a wider mix of Russian long-range aerial threats.
A Ukrainian Mirage 2000-5F reportedly intercepted and destroyed a Russian S8000 Banderol cruise missile with its onboard 30 mm cannon during an air defense mission over Ukraine. The reported engagement represents the first known gun kill of the Banderol by a Western fighter and shows the aircraft being used beyond missile-based interception as Kyiv adapts its limited fighter force to increasingly varied Russian strike systems.

The interception stands out primarily because of the weapon selected. Rather than using a MICA air-to-air missile, the Ukrainian pilot reportedly closed to a distance at which the Mirage’s internal cannon could be employed against the Banderol. The location of the engagement, the identity of the pilot, and the exact circumstances of detection and approach have not been disclosed. No detailed official account from the Ukrainian Air Force has so far clarified the firing distance or the number of rounds required to destroy the target.
The information was published on October 1, 2026, by French Aid to Europe, a French open-source project monitoring military assistance provided to Ukraine, before being reported on October 2 by Ukrainian defense outlet Militarnyi. French Aid to Europe described the event as the first known destruction of an S8000 Banderol by the cannon of a Western fighter aircraft. At this stage, however, the interception has not been confirmed in detail by Ukrainian or French authorities.
The Mirage 2000-5F is equipped with two fuselage-mounted DEFA 554 30 mm cannons, each supplied with 125 rounds and capable of firing at rates of up to 1,800 rounds per minute. The official French Ministry of the Armed Forces specification lists the 30 mm cannon among the Mirage 2000-5F’s armament alongside MICA IR and MICA EM missiles. The aircraft also carries the RDY radar, Link 16 tactical data link, and SERVAL, SABRE, and SPIRALE self-protection systems.
Using the cannon against a cruise missile nevertheless requires a very different interception profile from a MICA engagement. The pilot must close the distance to a relatively small target, establish a firing solution, and position the aircraft so that the trajectory of the rounds intersects the missile’s flight path. This constraint is particularly relevant because the Banderol is turbojet-powered and travels substantially faster than the one-way attack drones that Ukrainian fighters also intercept.
The S8000 Banderol is a compact Russian cruise missile developed by Kronshtadt. Available data gives it a cruising speed of between 520 and 560 km/h and a maximum speed of 620 to 650 km/h, with a range of up to 500 kilometers. It uses a Chinese-made Swiwin micro-turbojet producing up to 81.6 kgf of thrust. Its OFBC-150 warhead weighs 114.3 kg, including about 49.5 kg of explosive material.
Cannon employment primarily provides another option for managing interceptor stocks. Ukraine must simultaneously defend against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, Shahed drones and an expanding range of jet-powered threats. When a Mirage is already in a favorable position, a cannon engagement can preserve a MICA missile for a target requiring interception at greater range. The method remains demanding, however. It requires the fighter to move directly into the threat’s flight path and leaves less distance available to correct an unsuccessful approach. It therefore complements the use of air-to-air missiles and surface-to-air systems rather than replacing them.
The interception fits into the evolving missions assigned to the Mirage 2000 aircraft transferred by France from 2025 onward. The fighters are now integrated into Ukraine’s air defense network against Russian long-range strike systems alongside F-16s and ground-based defenses. Their RDY radar, MICA missiles and internal armament allow pilots to select different engagement methods depending on the target, its speed and the geometry of the interception. The reported use of the cannon against the Banderol also illustrates how the wider defensive architecture can assign different interceptors to different categories of threat.
For France and other European countries supporting Kyiv, the episode provides another example of Western fighter aircraft being used in combat against an expanding range of Russian missiles and drones. Moscow is employing a broader mix of strike systems in an effort to saturate and exhaust Ukrainian defenses, while Kyiv is combining surface-to-air systems, fighter aircraft and other interception methods according to the cost and difficulty of each target. In this context, the reported destruction of a Banderol with 30 mm cannon fire reflects an effort both to preserve stocks of Western missiles and to maintain interception capacity against increasingly varied Russian strike packages.
