Northrop Grumman YFQ-48A Fighter Drone Takes Flight in U.S. Air Force Autonomous Combat Aircraft Race

Northrop Grumman’s YFQ-48A Talon Blue fighter drone has completed its first fully autonomous flight, moving the company-funded aircraft from ground testing into a flight-test phase aimed at future U.S. Air Force and allied autonomous combat requirements. During the flight, the aircraft autonomously taxied, took off, maneuvered, and landed, demonstrating a complete end-to-end autonomous flight sequence without a pilot aboard.
Northrop announced the milestone on October 3, 2026, after the aircraft flew from Mojave Air and Space Port in California, where its subsidiary, Scaled Composites, developed and built the design. The flight gives Northrop a flying autonomous combat aircraft as the U.S. Air Force advances Collaborative Combat Aircraft concepts focused on affordable mass, autonomy, and cooperation with crewed fighters.

The YFQ-48A Talon Blue remains an internally funded Northrop Grumman development, not a U.S. Air Force production aircraft. The service assigned the YFQ-48A designation to the design in December 2025, but that designation did not constitute a production selection, and Northrop has not been publicly identified as one of the classified companies involved in the initial concept-refinement stage of CCA Increment 2.
Northrop continued development after General Atomics and Anduril advanced from the Air Force’s first CCA competition. Scaled Composites developed the redesigned Talon Blue around reduced weight, fewer components, and faster manufacturing, reflecting the Air Force’s broader emphasis on fielding autonomous combat aircraft in numbers rather than treating them as scarce, high-value assets.
Compared with Northrop’s earlier CCA proposal, the redesigned aircraft uses roughly 50 percent fewer parts, is about 1,000 pounds lighter and can be assembled approximately 30 percent faster, according to figures previously disclosed by the company. Those reductions matter because acquisition cost and production tempo will be central to any future autonomous combat-aircraft fleet intended to generate mass alongside crewed fighters.
The YFQ-48A uses a member of Pratt & Whitney’s PW500 turbofan family adapted for the autonomous combat-aircraft mission. Pratt & Whitney said it expanded the commercial engine’s operating limits through testing representative of Talon Blue flight and mission conditions, using an established propulsion family to reduce technical risk and potentially shorten development timelines.
Talon Blue’s configuration includes a high-mounted engine intake, wide-set landing gear, and an internal weapons bay intended to support different mission payloads. Northrop has not publicly disclosed key combat specifications such as maximum speed, operational radius, payload capacity, or weapons load, making direct performance comparisons with other CCA designs premature.
The aircraft is intended to support future crewed-uncrewed operations, but the October 3, 2026, flight did not demonstrate teaming with an F-35, the future F-47, or another crewed combat aircraft. Instead, the milestone validated autonomous operation across the complete flight sequence, an essential prerequisite before Northrop can demonstrate more demanding mission autonomy, sensor employment, weapons integration and coordinated operations with crewed fighters.
The development fits into the broader Army Recognition coverage of U.S. Air Force Collaborative Combat Aircraft development, which is aimed at extending the sensing, weapons capacity, and tactical reach of crewed fighters through lower-cost autonomous aircraft. Such aircraft could allow commanders to distribute sensors and weapons across larger formations while assigning uncrewed systems to missions that would otherwise expose pilots and more expensive combat aircraft to greater risk.
The YFQ-48A Talon Blue also forms part of Northrop Grumman’s wider Project Talon effort, which combines autonomous flight software, rapid aircraft development and scalable manufacturing processes. Northrop says its autonomy work draws on more than 500,000 accumulated autonomous flight hours from previous uncrewed-aircraft programs.
For Northrop Grumman, the first flight establishes a credible flying competitor for future U.S. or allied requirements without implying an Air Force procurement decision. The company must still demonstrate mission effectiveness, affordability, payload flexibility, and production scalability before Talon Blue could become a serious candidate for a future operational acquisition.
The YFQ-48A therefore enters a competitive field that already includes autonomous combat-aircraft efforts from General Atomics and Anduril, covered in Army Recognition reporting on General Atomics’ CCA development and Army Recognition coverage of Anduril’s autonomous fighter program. Talon Blue currently has no publicly announced U.S. Air Force production commitment.
Its first autonomous flight nevertheless gives Northrop an important technical foothold. By combining autonomous flight, an internal weapons bay, an established PW500-derived engine, and a design optimized for fewer parts, lower weight, and faster assembly, the YFQ-48A provides Northrop with a flight-tested basis from which to compete for future autonomous combat requirements if subsequent testing confirms its promised operational and industrial advantages.
