The Polish Air Force officially integrated its twelve KAI FA-50GF Block 10 light fighters into Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) operations at the 23rd Tactical Air Base in Mińsk Mazowiecki. This milestone follows the recent acquisition of compatible AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range missiles and 20 mm cannon ammunition, transforming the previously unarmed training platforms into active air defense assets. The deployment aims to secure Poland’s eastern border against low-altitude airspace violations and intercept incoming aerial threats without depleting the flying hours of frontline F-16 and F-35 fleets.

On October 2, 2026, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the country’s 12 FA-50GF Block 10 light fighters began Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) operations on October 1, 37 months after receiving the first two from South Korea in August 2023. The FA-50GF also entered combat duty following the acquisition of AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles and 20 mm ammunition absent from the original deliveries. All 12 light attack aircraft, delivered in 2023, belong to the 23rd Tactical Air Base at Mińsk Mazowiecki, 40 km east of Warsaw. Their introduction into armed alert operations allows Poland to assign the FA-50GF to airspace surveillance, interception, and identification missions previously dependent principally on F-16 and MiG-29 fighters. Major General Ireneusz Nowak specifically included Russian jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones among their potential interception targets. The milestone concerns the first 12 of 48 FA-50s purchased in September 2022 for $3 billion, as the remaining 36 FA-50PL fighters, originally expected from 2025, have been delayed until mid-2027 through early 2029.
Specifically configured for Poland to rapidly replace part of the combat capacity lost through the withdrawal and transfer of Soviet-era MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine, the FA-50GF (Gap Filler) Block 10 derives from the KAI T-50 Golden Eagle jet trainer, powered by a General Electric F404-GE-102 turbofan engine producing 78.7 kN of afterburning thrust. It measures 13.14 m long, spans 9.45 m, and weighs 6,470 kg empty, with a maximum takeoff weight of 12,300 kg. Performance includes Mach 1.5 maximum speed, a 14,630 m ceiling, and +8 g/-3 g maneuvering limits. Its Elta EL/M-2032 mechanically scanned radar supports air-to-air and air-to-ground modes, while seven external stations and an internal M197 20 mm cannon provide weapons carriage. Unlike the planned FA-50PL, the GF lacks AESA radar, AIM-120 and AIM-9X integration, a Sniper targeting pod, and operational aerial refueling. Its principal limitation is therefore short-range engagement capability rather than maximum speed, although Poland plans to eventually retrofit its FA-50GFs to the FA-50PL standard.

Poland initially received its FA-50GF fighters without combat missiles or cannon ammunition, subsequently leasing AIM-9P Sidewinders from South Korea and procuring AIM-9L/I-1 missiles. The AIM-9P belongs to an earlier generation of infrared-guided missiles, with earlier configurations optimized for rear-aspect engagements against engine exhaust, while the AIM-9L/I-1 supports all-aspect attacks when the target produces sufficient infrared contrast. Both use infrared homing rather than radar guidance, meaning the FA-50GF must maneuver into an appropriate missile launch envelope instead of engaging with an AIM-120 from beyond visual range. The FA-50GF’s three-barrel M197 fires 20×102 mm ammunition at 1,500 rounds per minute, equivalent to 25 rounds per second or 50 rounds during a two-second burst. Cannon interception requires close-range target tracking, while missile employment depends on seeker acquisition, target aspect, relative speed, and the permissible engagement area. Against small drones, cannon fire requires closer positioning and creates additional risks from alling projectiles and debris.
The FA-50GF’s planned counter-drone role is particularly relevant to the Russian Geran-4 and Geran-5, whose jet propulsion reduces interception time compared with propeller-driven Geran-2 drones. The Geran-5 entered operations in January 2026 with a reported cruising speed of 450 to 600 km/h, while the Geran-4 appeared in May 2026. At 600 km/h, a Geran-5 covers 100 km in ten minutes and 150 km in fifteen minutes, leaving a narrow response window when detection occurs close to a defended area. An FA-50GF flying at 900 km/h would close a 30 km gap behind a 600 km/h drone in six minutes, assuming constant speeds and a direct pursuit. A head-on encounter at those speeds produces a 1,500 km/h closing rate, or 25 km per minute. The fighter’s radar must then detect and track the drone, while the AIM-9 seeker must acquire a sufficiently strong infrared signature before launch. A cannon attack requires a much shorter engagement distance and presents additional risks when conducted above residential areas.
The 36 planned FA-50PL Block 20 fighters will be equipped with the PhantomStrike AESA radar from RTX, an AIM-9X Block II compatibility, and a planned AIM-120C-5/C-7/C-8 integration. The PhantomStrike uses gallium-nitride (GaN) electronics and air cooling; the first radar reached KAI in October 2025 after its selection in May 2023. Poland also signed an agreement with the U.S. covering AIM-9X integration on January 13, 2026, followed by an authorization for AIM-120C integration on April 8. The AIM-9X Block II will bring imaging-infrared guidance, thrust-vectoring, high-off-boresight targeting, and lock-on-after-launch capability, while the AMRAAM will allow radar-guided beyond-visual-range (BVR) engagements. Planned equipment also includes Link 16, helmet-mounted cueing, AN/AAQ-33 Sniper pods, GBU-12 bombs and 300-gallon (1,136-liter) external tanks. Aerial-refueling probe development has involved an A330 MRTT, but aircraft-level certification remains outstanding.
Poland’s $3 billion September 2022 purchase originally scheduled 12 FA-50GF deliveries in 2023 and 36 FA-50PL deliveries between 2025 and 2028. A January 9, 2026, amendment shifted the latter to mid-2027 through early 2029, following delays involving avionics, radar integration, component supplies, and weapons certification. The FA-50PL prototype also missed its November 2025 first flight target. Poland also abandoned the planned conversion of its 12 FA-50GF aircraft into an upgraded FA-50GL configuration in late 2025 because of economic considerations. Consequently, 25% of the contracted FA-50 fleet will retain the more restricted GF configuration, while the other 75% is intended to receive PhantomStrike radar and expanded missile compatibility. KAI’s June 20, 2024, cooperation agreement with WZL Nr. 2 covers maintenance, repair, overhaul, and logistics, although the two variants will require different avionics and weapons support arrangements. The delay also postpones Poland’s ability to distribute beyond-visual-range interception duties across more fighter squadrons.
The requirement for additional QRA aircraft follows repeated violations of Polish airspace since the start of Russian operations against Ukraine. Between September 9 and 10, 2025, 19 to 23 drones crossed into Poland over seven hours and fifteen minutes, prompting fighter launches and the temporary closure of Warsaw Chopin, Warsaw Modlin, Rzeszów-Jasionka and Lublin airports. Up to four drones were destroyed, with Dutch F-35s participating alongside Polish F-16s, Italian airborne early-warning aircraft, Belgian A330 MRTT support and ground-based Patriot air defense assets, while an AIM-120 AMRAAM fired by a Polish F-16 struck a house in Wyryki-Wola without detonating. Poland therefore invoked NATO Article 4, followed by the establishment of Operation Eastern Sentry on September 12, 2025. On July 30, 2026, a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile entered Polish airspace and struck near Tarnawa-Kolonia, 100 km from the Ukrainian border, producing a crater 10 m wide and 4.9 m deep. A Russian Mi-8 also briefly penetrated Polish airspace by 300 m for 42 seconds on September 23.
FA-50GF fighters can now assume selected missions against targets compatible with their short-range weapons, but their entry into QRA duty does not establish an increase in continuously available alert pairs or a measurable reduction in response time. Nevertheless, Poland continues its fighter transition following the transfer of 10 to 14 MiG-29s to Ukraine since 2022, with another six to eight of the 14 remaining aircraft approaching their retirement by December 2025. The Polish Air Force also operates 48 F-16C/D Block 52+ fighters, covered by an August 2025 modernization agreement valued at $3.8 billion, and has ordered 32 F-35A Husarz fighters for $4.6 billion. The ninth F-35A, serial 3517, arrived at Łask on October 1, 2026, becoming the first Polish unit assembled at Cameri, Italy. The planned fleet will total 128 FA-50, F-16, and F-35 fighters once all deliveries are completed, excluding remaining MiG-29s. Assigning suitable short-range interceptions to FA-50GF aircraft could then preserve F-16 and F-35 flying hours, as well as AMRAAM stocks, but measurable benefits depend on actual alert coverage, aircraft availability, weapons expenditure and interception results.
