On October 13, 2026, Bengaluru-based Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace unveiled a full-scale static prototype of the FWD Supreme in New Delhi, introducing a platform designed as India’s first indigenous AI-driven autonomous combat drone. The aircraft is engineered for reconnaissance, electronic warfare, strikes, and loyal wingman operations alongside crewed fighters under a proprietary multi-drone concept. The initiative aims to reduce procurement costs by deploying low-cost autonomous airframes to augment conventional fighter fleets.

On October 13, 2026, the Indian company Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace (FWDA), based at Bengaluru, unveiled a full-scale static prototype of the FWD Supreme in New Delhi, introducing what could become India’s first indigenous AI-driven autonomous combat drone for reconnaissance, electronic warfare, strikes, and cooperation with crewed fighters. Founded in 2022 by Suhas Tejaskanda, Flying Wedge is developing the 250 kg Supreme Lite demonstrator and the larger Supreme Heavy, targeting a payload capacity of 350 kg, a maximum speed of Mach 0.85, and a range exceeding 1,500 km. The company’s proposed Mobbing Doctrine would assign 15 to 20 AI-piloted loyal wingmen to one crewed fighter, with unit prices targeted at $3 to 5 million, compared with the company’s $100 million benchmark for a conventional fighter. India’s Ministry of Defence acquisition chief A. Anbarasu attended the unveiling, but no government contract or funding has been confirmed. At the time of writing, the Supreme Heavy remains a static prototype, while the Supreme Lite has completed taxi trials but has not flown.
The Supreme Heavy’s initial configuration combines a 10 m-long, 10 m-wide flying-wing airframe with an internal weapons bay and a propulsion system generating 5 kN of combined thrust. Its intended takeoff weight would range between 1,000 and 1,500 kg, although the final configuration remains unresolved. At 1,500 kg, its 350 kg payload would represent 23.3% of the drone’s total weight, leaving 1,150 kg for fuel, engines, structure, and onboard systems; its static thrust-to-weight ratio would be around 0.34 at that weight, or 0.51 at 1,000 kg, before accounting for aerodynamic drag. Flying Wedge targets cruising speeds of 500 to 600 km/h, a maximum speed of Mach 0.8 to 0.85, a range above 1,500 km, and endurance exceeding two hours. These are design objectives, not flight-tested performance, but the company already develops the Kaal Bhairava, India’s first AI-enabled Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) drone, which features a range of up to 3,000 km, over 30 hours of flight endurance, AI-driven target recognition, and swarm coordination capabilities.

Flying Wedge intends to use the Supreme Lite, which weighs 250 kg, to reduce the development risks associated with the larger variant, which would have six times the takeoff mass if the Supreme Heavy ultimately weighs 1,500 kg. To validate flight control, navigation and autonomy before development advances, two smaller configurations have completed taxi trials, covering ground handling, steering, braking and propulsion response, but neither has demonstrated sustained flight. The company initially targeted a maiden flight during the third quarter of 2026, ending September 30, but missed that objective. On October 13, Tejaskanda indicated that the first flight could take place within six to eight weeks, placing the target in late November or December. Chief Technology Officer Girish G. Dixit, who previously worked on the LCA Tejas, indicated that the Supreme Heavy’s detailed design was 50% complete.
Testing under India’s Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification is planned, but the Supreme Lite’s first flight would establish only an initial step toward validating the Supreme Heavy’s separate structural, aerodynamic and propulsion requirements. The FWD Supreme’s proposed autonomy architecture combines onboard flight control, sensor processing, threat identification, and mission management without requiring a ground operator to control every manoeuvre. Its planned visual-odometry system would estimate the aircraft position from successive camera images when GPS is jammed, although the integration of an inertial navigation system and a method of correcting accumulated position errors would remain necessary. The Supreme Heavy is also intended to use satellite communications and secure aircraft-to-aircraft links to exchange positions, sensor information and task assignments.
Flying Wedge is cooperating with the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru on encryption, but has not established the system’s communications range, bandwidth, latency or resistance to electronic warfare. The distinction between autonomous flight and autonomous combat is important: maintaining a flight path without human steering does not demonstrate reliable identification of hostile aircraft, authorization of weapon release, or engagement of moving targets under electronic attack. The operational concept, which Flying Wedge calls its Mobbing Doctrine, envisages 15 to 20 autonomous aircraft supporting one crewed fighter, with reconnaissance, electronic warfare, decoy and strike tasks distributed across the group. If all drones were Supreme Heavy variants carrying their maximum advertised payload, 15 units would collectively transport 5,250 kg of mission equipment or weapons, while 20 would carry 7,000 kg.
A group could potentially use reconnaissance aircraft to locate enemy radar emitters, decoys to provoke air defense responses and armed aircraft to attack selected sites, provided that its sensors and communications supported coordinated engagements. Flying Wedge has also proposed retaining combat capability after losing four or five aircraft: in a 20-aircraft formation, five losses would eliminate 25% of the force and up to 1,750 kg of its original payload capacity, leaving 15 aircraft available for reassignment. Still, the concept depends on automated task allocation, collision avoidance, and resilient communications, because a fighter pilot could not manually control 20 aircraft during combat. Flying Wedge targets a price around $3 to 4 million for a basic Supreme unmanned aircraft and no more than $5 million with additional weapons and sensors, compared with its $100 million conventional fighter benchmark.
Fifteen drones would therefore cost $45 to 75 million, while 20 would cost $60 to 100 million; purchasing 100 would require $300 to 500 million before weapons, maintenance, and infrastructure are included. These figures imply a 20- to 33-fold difference in aircraft purchase price, not equivalent combat capability or lifecycle cost. The company estimates that an investment of $100 million is necessary to develop the FWD Supreme, including $10 million for Lite, and has cited $7 million associated with the lighter-aircraft effort. Separately, Tracxn recorded $3.44 million in company funding across eight rounds through April 4, 2026. Tejaskanda confirmed that the Supreme had not received government funding and was seeking private investment, leaving the proposed prices dependent on additional investment, engineering results, and production volumes.
The programme’s industrial objective is to develop the airframe, autonomous software and a substantial proportion of its equipment within India, rather than depend entirely on imported aircraft or flight control systems. Flying Wedge estimates domestic content at 90% for the Supreme Lite and 65% for the Supreme Heavy, potentially increasing to 80-85% for the Heavy if an Indian engine is adopted. DRDO’s Manik engine is a candidate, although the company has not confirmed that its thrust, dimensions, fuel consumption, and integration requirements meet the Supreme Heavy’s objectives. Through Operation Triple Seven, Flying Wedge is pursuing foreign industrial cooperation, including Portugal’s Sketchpixel LDA, also known as Keydef, for simulation, AI integration, communications, and Kaalbhairav manufacturing.
Those programs demonstrate a broader product-development effort but do not establish that the heavier Supreme airframe, its propulsion system, or autonomous combat software are ready for production. Within India, the FWD Supreme would enter a field already occupied by DRDO’s Ghatak unmanned combat aircraft and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s CATS Warrior loyal wingman programs, both pursuing capabilities relevant to reconnaissance, strike, or cooperation with crewed fighters. The Ghatak’s associated SWiFT flying-wing demonstrator completed its first flight on July 1, 2022, followed by an autonomous landing demonstration in December 2023, and on March 3, 2026, India’s Defence Procurement Board recommended the acquisition of 60 units.
HAL’s CATS Warrior, intended to accompany India’s crewed fighters, including the Tejas, is still under development. International programs are further into testing. General Atomics’ YFQ-42A first flew in August 2025, Anduril’s YFQ-44A has conducted airborne weapons-related experimentation, and Australia’s Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat had accumulated more than 150 test sorties by June 2026. Turkey’s Bayraktar Kizilelma demonstrated a beyond-visual-range missile engagement in November 2025. These aircraft differ in weight, payload, and intended roles, but their flight and weapons trials establish capabilities that the FWD Supreme has still to demonstrate. Flying Wedge must still fly Lite, complete Heavy’s design, validate its propulsion and autonomous coordination, and integrate weapons before the programme can progress toward military qualification or production.
