FAA introduces searchable medication guide for pilots and controllers

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced an online guide to help US pilots and air traffic controllers check which medications they can take and how long they may need to wait before returning to duty.

Called MedGuide, the searchable tool covers prescription and over-the-counter drugs, with information on waiting periods after starting a medication or taking subsequent doses.

The first version includes only medications the FAA categorizes as allowed. The agency plans to add conditionally acceptable and unacceptable medications in future updates, so a drug’s absence from the guide does not define whether it can be used while flying.

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) highlighted the resource on October 15, 2026, saying it provides an improved way for pilots to understand the implications of taking various medications.

“This tool, while still a work in progress, equips aviators to make safe, fit-for-flight decisions about medication use,” said Mark Larsen, NBAA’s director of safety and flight operations.

Larsen said the guide gives pilots a simpler way to understand medication restrictions, including waiting periods that can differ between a first dose and later doses.

The FAA says starting a new medication generally requires a 48-hour observation period before returning to safety-related duties, although drug-specific guidance may call for a longer or shorter wait. The underlying condition may also require additional time to establish that it is stable.

An allowed medication does not, by itself, mean a pilot or controller is fit for duty. The agency says users must also consider their medical condition and any side effects. The agency says MedGuide is a reference, not a substitute for an individual medical assessment or advice from a doctor.

According to NBAA, the tool addresses an information gap identified by the FAA’s Mental Health and Aviation Medical Clearances Aviation Rulemaking Committee in its 2024 report. Uncertainty about medication rules can leave pilots unsure where they stand before applying for a medical certificate or returning to the cockpit.

NBAA said it would continue pressing for clearer guidance and practical timelines as the FAA expands the tool. The post FAA introduces searchable medication guide for pilots and controllers appeared first on AeroTime.
