Japan scrambles fighters as Chinese drones fly near Okinawa during Keen Sword

Japan scrambled fighter jets on October 19, 2026, after two Chinese military drones and a Y-9 intelligence-gathering aircraft flew near Okinawa on the opening day of Keen Sword 27, a major military exercise involving Japan and the United States.

According to a press release from the Joint Staff of Japan’s Ministry of Defense, a BZK-005 reconnaissance drone and a Y-9 flew in from the East China Sea, before passing between Okinawa’s main island and Miyakojima into the Pacific Ocean and then returning through the same gap toward the Chinese mainland.

A TB-001 reconnaissance and attack drone entered the Pacific between Taiwan and Japan’s Yonaguni Island, flew as far as the waters off Amami Oshima, then turned back and exited between Okinawa and Miyakojima.

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) scrambled fighters from its Southwestern Air Defense Force and photographed all three aircraft.

The Y-9 is a four-engine turboprop transport that serves as the basis for several intelligence-gathering and electronic warfare variants.

Earlier that year, on February 26, 2025, a GJ-2 armed drone was spotted on the same route for the first time near Japan.

While flights through this particular corridor remain relatively uncommon, Chinese drone activity around Japan’s southwestern islands has been reported repeatedly in recent weeks.

On October 9, 2026, a TB-001 flew over the East China Sea off Okinawa.
On October 14, 2026, a suspected Chinese drone passed between Yonaguni and Taiwan, plus a WZ-7 reconnaissance drone flew over the East China Sea.
Annual figures also show how unmanned aircraft have become a recurring feature of Chinese military activity near Japan. The Joint Staff reported eight Chinese drone flights in fiscal year 2023 [running from April to March – ed. note], rising to 23 in fiscal year 2024, before declining to 16 in fiscal year 2025. Five flights had been publicly announced in the current fiscal year as of October 19, 2026.

According to Koizumi, this activity highlights the need to adapt to new methods of warfare, particularly the growing use of unmanned aircraft. The issue is under consideration as Japan revises its three national security and defense policy documents.

Keen Sword 27 brings thousands of troops to Japan’s southwestern islands

Keen Sword 27 runs from October 19 to 29, 2026. The Joint Staff’s exercise announcement lists approximately 45,000 Japanese personnel, 6,100 vehicles, 40 vessels, and 260 aircraft. US Forces Japan data puts the US contingent at approximately 11,000 service members.

Forces from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the Philippines are also taking part. Training covers integrated air and missile defense, anti-ship warfare, amphibious operations, and dispersed operations.

Asked whether the Chinese flights were a response to the exercise, Koizumi declined to draw a link, remarking that Japan needed to assess China’s intentions carefully rather than act on assumptions. He described Keen Sword 27 as a demonstration of the alliance’s strength and of the US commitment to Japan’s defense. The post Japan scrambles fighters as Chinese drones fly near Okinawa during Keen Sword appeared first on AeroTime.
