Uruguay acquires up to six A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from Embraer

Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer announced the sale of up to six A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Uruguayan Air Force (FAU).  

This contract is part of FAU’s fleet renewal program and includes the immediate purchase of one aircraft, with a commitment to acquire five additional units. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2025, along with mission equipment, integrated logistics services, and a flight simulator. 

“We are honored by the Uruguayan Air Force’s decision,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “With this acquisition, Uruguay will gain enhanced capabilities for border surveillance and increased operational readiness.” 

Uruguayan Minister of National Defense Armando Castaingdebat emphasized that the acquisition represents a significant step forward, noting that Uruguay has not purchased new combat aircraft since 1981. 

With this purchase, Uruguay becomes the sixth South American nation to operate the A-29 Super Tucano, joining Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay.  

The A-29 Super Tucano is a turboprop attack and light training aircraft designed for diverse missions such as border monitoring, illegal activity control, reconnaissance, counter-insurgency, advanced training, and light attack roles. According to the manufacturer, over 160 Super Tucanos operate in South America. 

On the second day of the Farnborough International Airshow 2024, Embraer announced the sale of six A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Paraguayan Air Force.
