UK plane manufacturer Britten-Norman poised to ramp Islander production
The UK plane manufacturer Britten-Norman is poised to ramp up production of its Islander utility aircraft after securing further investment.
Britten-Norman confirmed on October 14, 2024, that a second funding round had proved successful with Northern Ireland-based Beechlands Enterprise backing the planemaker.
The extra investment will allow Britten-Norman to scale manufacturing operations in the UK up to eight aircraft a year and transform aftermarket business.
Manufacturing will be focused primarily on the unleaded piston version of the Islander, with around 20% of aircraft being delivered as turboprops.
“This welcome investment from Beechlands will enable Britten-Norman to complete its aircraft manufacturing repatriation programme, with the first aircraft destined for the Falkland Islands. We will also be focussing on our important international aftermarket operations, ensuring our long-term position as the manufacturer of choice for reliable, high-intensity, low-cost, short-field, sub-regional air transportation,” said William Hynett, Britten-Norman’s CEO.
With new funding secured, Britten-Norman will invest in more advanced manufacturing tools and machinery and enhancing component production capabilities.
“We’re delighted to invest in Britten-Norman. Great people, great product and, now we have provided more capital, great prospects,” said Alison Rankin Frost, Director of Beechlands.
Earlier this year Britten-Norman’s future appeared to be in the balance when the company filed a notice to appoint administrators.
However, its future was secured with new investment from a group of investors led by 4D Capital Partners in March 2024.
The Islander aircraft is a versatile and reliable utility aircraft known for its durability and adaptability. It features a distinctive high-wing design, which provides excellent visibility for both the crew and passengers.
The Islander is used for a wide range of missions, including passenger transport, cargo hauling, surveillance, and search-and-rescue operations. It was also developed into a multirole military transport aircraft called the Defender.
