Garuda Indonesia plans to increase fleet by 15 to 20 aircraft in 2025
Garuda Indonesia, the largest carrier in the southeast Asian island country, has announced its intention to increase its fleet by 15 to 20 aircraft in 2025.
The airline’s new CEO, Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan, who’s tenure at the helm of the airline started in November 2024, announced these plans during a press conference on December 6, 2024.
Garuda’s top executive also indicated that the carrier expects to receive two aircraft before the end of 2024 and another two in January 2025.
According to Indonesia’s main news agency, state-owned Antara News, the country’s minister for state-owned enterprises, Erick Thohir, stated that Indonesia needs to increase its commercial aircraft fleet in the coming years in order to meet demand.
According to these media reports, the minister pointed at the interest in engaging with conversations with the two major Western aircraft manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing, as well as with Russian and Chinese aircraft makers, in order to fulfill this capacity needs.
Ch-aviation database shows that, as of December 8, 2024, Garuda Indonesia has a fleet of 74 aircraft, of which 55 are active: ten Airbus A330s (several different versions), six Boeing 777-300ER and 39 Boeing 737-800s.
Aircraft procurement at Garuda Indonesia has experienced some sudden changes of direction in the last few years.
In October 2024, Garuda Indonesia canceled an order for four A330-800neo aircraft (a relatively rare version of this aircraft, which is currently operated only by Air Greenland, Kuwait Airways and Uganda Airlines). In 2019, following a string of Boeing 737 MAX crashes, it was announced that the Indonesian flag carrier was planning to cancel an existing order for 49 aircraft of the type, but this move was later denied by the airline.
