Investigators begin analyzing black boxes from DHL aircraft crash in Vilnius
Investigators have begun the process of decrypting data from the black boxes extracted from a DHL cargo aircraft that crashed in Vilnius in late November 2024.
In a press release, issued on December 9, 2024, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Lithuania announced that it will lead the investigation along with the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau. At the same time, a separate safety investigation is being carried out by the Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Division of the Ministry of Justice.
Investigators began examining data from the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). During flights, the FDR captures data about the aircraft, including its speed and direction, and the CVR records conversations among the crew, radio communications, and other ambient sounds such as engine noises and warning alerts.
The data was extracted by the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU).
“As part of the close cooperation within the European Network of Civil Aviation Safety Investigation Authorities (ENCASIA), the investigating authority in Lithuania asked the BFU for assistance,” the German agency explained in a statement.
The Lithuanian Safety Investigation Team will use this data to inspect the aircraft’s attitude and flight performance model to recreate the entire flight and landing scenario as accurately as possible. They are also still working on the cockpit voice recorder data.
Additionally, the pre-trial investigation is ongoing. This includes checking the scene, examining seized objects, analyzing flight data, and determining the actual circumstances of the crash, as well as assessing the damage to people, property, and the environment. So far, around 30 people have been interviewed in the pre-trial investigation.
On the morning of November 25, 2024, a DHL Boeing 737-400 freighter crashed near Vilnius Airport (VNO), close to a residential area. One pilot, a Spanish citizen, was killed in the crash. Three other people on the aircraft, nationals from Lithuania, Germany and Spain, were injured.
According to the Prosecutor’s General’s Office of Lithuania, the Spanish and German citizens from the flight are receiving treatment in their home countries. The Spanish pilot, who was severely injured in the crash, was initially taken to Vilnius Santaros Clinics, but on December 5, 2024, he was transferred to Spain.
