Turkish Airlines signs lease agreement with SMBC for five Airbus A321neos
Turkish Airlines is set to add five additional Airbus A321 neo aircraft to its fleet after reaching a lease agreement with Ireland-based SMBC Aviation Capital.
Under the agreement announced on December 12, 2024, Turkey’s flag carrier will receive the Airbus A321 neo jets next year, marking yet another important step in the airline’s fleet expansion and modernization strategy.
Since 2022, SMBC has leased 15 Airbus planes to Turkish Airlines from its direct order book with the European planemaker.
Prof. Ahmet Bolat, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee, said: “We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with SMBC Aviation Capital through this agreement. These Airbus A321neo aircraft will play a significant role in advancing our fleet modernization strategy, enhancing our operational efficiency, and supporting our sustainability goals.”
Barry Flannery, the Chief Commercial Officer of SMBC Aviation Capital, said that the company looks forward to “many more successful collaborations” in the years to come.
Flannery added: “This transaction is a testament to the strong relationship we have built with Turkish Airlines. The Airbus A321neo aircraft will not only enhance Turkish Airlines’ operational capabilities but also contribute to a more sustainable aviation industry.”
In November 2024, it was announced that BOC Aviation had entered into a lease agreement with Turkish Airlines for six Airbus A321neo aircraft, with delivery scheduled for 2027.
BOC Aviation already has 16 aircraft placed with Turkish Airlines, which includes five A320neos, seven Boeing 737 MAX 8s, and four Boeing 777-300ERs.
According to ch-aviation, Turkish Airlines is currently awaiting deliveries of 342 aircraft, including 206 A321neos from Airbus.
In December 2023, it was announced that Turkish Airlines had ordered 220 Airbus aircraft, comprised of 150 A321s and 70 A350 widebody aircraft (50 A350-900s, 15 A350-1000s and 5 A350F freighters).
Turkish Airlines also has orders in place for 35 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and ten 787-9 Dreamliners.
