JAL Boeing 787 wing collides with tail of Delta Boeing 737 in Seattle: video
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transport Safety Bureau (NTSB) in the US have launched an investigation following a ground collision involving a Japan Airlines (JAL) Boeing 787 Dreamliner and a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). Operations at the airport were temporarily halted at the airport while the incident was dealt with, although no passengers or crew were reported injured as a result.
The collision occurred at around 10:17 local time on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. According to reports, the right wing of the JAL aircraft struck the tail of the Delta airplane as it taxied behind it. The JAL Boeing 787-9 registered JA868J had just arrived at the airport from Tokyo-Narita International Airport (NRT) as flight JA68 with 172 passengers and 13 crew members on board.
The Delta Boeing 737-800 registered N3737C was preparing to depart as DL1921 Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) in Mexico with 142 passengers onboard. The Delta jet was reportedly awaiting de-icing to commence when the incident occurred.

The Delta passengers were flown to their intended destination later in the day. “There are no reports of injuries for crew or customers on the flight. We apologize for the experience and delay in travel,” Delta said in a statement, adding that it will work with the FAA and others to investigate how the incident occurred.
Japan Airlines said in a statement that, “We sincerely apologize to all involved for any inconvenience. The detailed cause and circumstances are currently under investigation.”
Video and images posted online appear to show the JAL aircraft taxying past the Delta 737 from right to left. However, as the right outboard section of the wing on the JAL 787 reaches abeam the rear of the Delta jet, it strikes the rudder of the latter, deflecting the rudder to the left before coming to a sudden stop. Images show the two aircraft stationary with the JAL aircraft wing embedded deep into the tail of the Delta aircraft.

The planes were in an area that is not under air traffic control, the FAA added. Airport police and firefighters responded to the incident and immediately worked with both airlines to secure the aircraft, ensure airport safety protocols were followed, and ensure all onboard were deplaned safely.
Speaking with The Seattle Times, Jackie Patton, a Vancouver resident and passenger on the Delta plane spoke about when the collision happened. She described “violent shaking in the plane and a really loud crunching sound. It was obvious right away something was wrong,” she said in an interview. “The pilot later confirmed that the plane had been hit by another aircraft” she added.
The damage to both aircraft has been described as significant, according to a Port of Seattle spokesperson. At the time of writing, both aircraft remain on the ground in Seattle awaiting damage assessment and repair.
