Volocopter lays off its entire workforce as insolvency proceedings go ahead
Advanced air mobility developer Volocopter has laid off its entire workforce as it enters insolvency proceedings, several German media outlets have reported.
Volocopter filed an application for the opening of insolvency proceedings on December 26, 2024. A court in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, where the firm is based, has now confirmed the start of this legal process through which creditors will be able to present their claims.
As a result, Volocopter’s workforce, consisting of nearly 450 staff members, was told to stand down from their jobs on March 3, 2025.
Volocopter’s administrators have stated that they have not given up on the search for new investors, which could provide a last-minute lifeline for the company to continue its operations. However, as time goes by the chances of a positive resolution are diminishing.
Founded in 2011, Volocopter was one of the early pioneers in the eVTOL space. In its decade and a half of existence, the company developed a number of manned and unmanned eVTOL aircraft, such as the two-seater VoloCity multi-rotor aircraft and the VoloDron unmanned aircraft system (UAS).
However, the path to market has been slower and more costly than anticipated and, admittedly ambitious, projects like the launch of demonstration flights during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris failed to materialize, just as investors’ appetite for investing in the advanced air mobility space began to peter out.
This is the second high profile insolvency of an eVTOL developer based in Germany in a matter of weeks. On February 23, 2025, Lilium, which is also based in southern Germany, stopped all operations after the collapse of a restructuring plan put together by a consortium of investors.
