Mexicana accepts delivery of its first Embraer E190-E2 regional jet
Mexicana de Aviación, Mexico’s newly reinstated government-run carrier, has taken delivery of the first of 20 Embraer E2 regional jets. The delivery of the carrier’s first E190-E2 regional jet comes as the emerging airline establishes a foothold in the Mexican aviation scene with new aircraft and an expanding route network. The delivery also marks the next stage of the E2 series’ growing presence in Latin America.
This delivery is the first of 20 new-generation E2 jets ordered by Mexicana, comprising 10 E190-E2 and 10 E195-E2 aircraft. The deal, announced in June 2024, represented a strategic investment by Mexico’s state-owned carrier to enhance connectivity and operational efficiency. With the first aircraft right on schedule, the deliveries were due to begin in the second quarter of 2025, 12 months after the order was placed.
EmbraerAccording to Embraer, Mexicana will configure its E190-E2s with 108 seats, while the increased capacity of the E195-E2s will accommodate 132 passengers, both in a single-class cabin layout in a 2-by-2 configuration. According to an Embraer statement, “Mexicana’s E2 jets will be configured in a single class layout, offering passengers a modern, spacious cabin experience with no middle seats. The E2’s advanced aerodynamics, new-generation engines, and refined systems contribute to a 29% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the previous-generation jet.”
“This delivery marks a new chapter for Mexicana,” said Leobardo Bojórquez, CEO of Mexicana. “The E2’s performance, economics, and passenger appeal make it the perfect aircraft to support our growth strategy. We are excited to bring this new level of service and efficiency to our customers.”
“We are proud to deliver the first E2 to Mexicana and support the airline’s mission to connect more communities across Mexico with greater efficiency and comfort,” said Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation. “The E2 is the most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft in the world, and it’s ideally suited to Mexicana’s network and sustainability goals.”
EmbraerAlongside a modern cabin interior, the E190-E2 was selected by Mexicana for its quiet operation, lower emissions, and leading economics. The aircraft are also equipped with full fly-by-wire technology, which reduces pilot workload and enhances safety. Mexicana’s E2 fleet will be supported by Embraer’s comprehensive services and support package, ensuring high aircraft availability and operational reliability from day one.
Mexicana re-born
Mexicana returned to the skies in 2023 with a new vision and a renewed commitment to serve the Mexican aviation market. The previous incarnation of Mexicana ceased operations and closed down in August 2010, saddled with huge debts, ongoing losses, and other operational issues. However, in 2023, the Mexican government brought the brand and re-launched the carrier, using the expertise and operational capabilities of the Mexican Defence Ministry to assist it in doing so. Over its long history, Mexicana was a pioneer in many areas, such as introducing the first jet aircraft in Mexico and creating a loyalty program for its frequent flyers.
EmbraerBefore the arrival of the new Embraer, the airline operated three 180-seat Boeing 737-800s leased from the Mexican Air Force to fly 15 routes to 15 destinations across Mexico. However, the airline has plans to expand internationally once it builds up its new Embraer fleet, with routes to cities in North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America all in the pipeline.
While specific US airports haven’t been officially named, the airline is known to be in discussions with several major US airports and is targeting cities such as Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, New York, Atlanta, and Miami.
