SAS orders up to 55 Embraer E195 E2 aircraft for its Scandinavian network
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is ordering up to 55 Embraer E-195 E2 aircraft (45 firm orders and 10 options), SAS CEO Anko van der Werff announced at a press conference in Copenhagen on July 1, 2025. The event was attended also by Embraer’s Group President and CEO, Francisco Gomes Neto and its President and CEO for Commercial Aircraft, Arjan Meijer.
E2 deliveries to SAS are expected to start in late 2027 and will be spread over four years, with the airline receiving approximately one new aircraft per month. The total order’s value is around US$4 billion.
“This is a bold investment in the future of SAS and a major step forward in our transformation.” according to van der Werff, who added “it is a seamless fit for us”.
The airline executive named the E2s performance and fuel efficiency as two of the main factors for this choice. He also mentioned noise reduction, of up to 65% compared to previous generation aircraft, and a non-trivial aspect in airports like Copenhagen, which is very close to the city center.
“Sustainability is totally ingrained in the Scandinavian way of life, it’s not an afterthought, going for too long with the older generation of aircraft, wouldn’t have been an option for us” underlined van der Werff.

The E2s will help us grow in all three countries and develop our Scandinavian network.” van der Werff said, adding that “We first had to make sure the company was working, stabilize it. And now it is time to get into a growth phase.”

Besides the recent new international route announcements, such as the launch of new routes between Copenhagen and Seoul (ICN) and Mumbai (BOM), van der Werff highlighted also the growth potential of its core Scandinavian network.
In this regard, the E2s will provide flexibility for SAS to offer better connectivity between secondary cities throughout the Nordics and the SAS’ three capitals (Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo). This way SAS expects to retain some of the traffic that is currently using hubs outside the region for connections.
This traffic flows can work both ways too, with Nordic destinations attracting a growing interest from international visitors, particularly when it comes to experiential and nature tourism.
“Our destinations have exactly what the world is looking for at the moment: authenticity, unique places, sense of space and sustainability. We had all of this in our Scandinavian network.” he said.
The new SAS order represents an important win for the Brazilian manufacturer, which during the 2025 Paris Air Show saw one of its major European customers, Polish airline LOT, switch to Airbus to replace its regional jet fleet.
SAS will become the 22nd operator of the E2 family of aircraft.
As of June 2025, SAS regional subsidiary SAS Link operates a fleet of 12 Embraer E195 E1 jets.
