Ex-China Eastern chairman under investigation over corruption allegations
The former chairman and head of China Eastern Airlines is facing investigation by China’s anti-graft watchdog over allegations of corruption.
Liu Shaoyong, who led the Shanghai-based carrier from 2009 until his resignation in 2022, is being investigated for “serious violations of discipline and law,” according to a statement by China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the National Supervisory Commission.
China Eastern is the country’s second-largest carrier, and is owned primarily by the Chinese government. It is one of the three major airlines in the country, along with Air China and China Southern Airlines.
Liu, a qualified pilot, is credited with turning the China Eastern around after it posted record losses before his appointment. Under his leadership, China Eastern merged with Shanghai Airlines in 2010. In March 2012, the carrier entered a strategic agreement with the Qantas Group to set up Jetstar Hong Kong. In the same year, the airline was recognized as one of the 50 most valuable Chinese companies by British advertising company WPP.
The two investigative bodies have yet to provide further details of the allegations.
The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection is the highest internal control institution of the Communist Party of China (CPC), tasked with enforcing internal rules and regulations and combating corruption and malfeasance within the party.
Meanwhile, the National Supervisory Commission is China’s top anti-graft watchdog, reporting directly to the National People’s Congress (NPC) and its Standing Committee. It operates independently from China’s judicial and governmental system.
