UK court denies appeal to freeze Vietjet assets over unpaid aircraft dispute
A UK court has rejected a request to freeze low-cost carrier Vietjet’s assets over unpaid debts amounting to almost $217 million.
This is the latest update regarding the ongoing legal dispute between Vietjet and aircraft leasing company FW Aviation, part of London-based investment firm FitzWalter Capital.
In its allegations against the Vietnamese low-cost carrier, FW Aviation said Vietjet has not fulfilled rental payments on four Airbus A321 aircraft which were leased from them. FW Aviation has since repossessed the four aircraft.
In April 2025, London’s High Court ruled that Vietjet owed FW Aviation over $180 million. This amount has now increased to $217 million, as of July 25, 2025.
On June 24, 2025, the Court of Appeal dismissed Vietjet’s claim that the leasing of the four A321 aircraft had been invalidly terminated by FW Aviation.
FitzWalter Capital then escalated its plea by seeking to freeze Vietjet’s worldwide assets in order for the airline’s debt to be paid.
The latest ruling to reject the plea to freeze Vietjet’s assets will allow the carrier time to resolve or settle its arrears with the Ireland-based leasing company.
On June 16, 2025, Vietjet entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus at the Paris Air Show for 100 single-aisle A321neo aircraft, with the potential to add another 50 in the future. This marked the largest aircraft order for the 2025 edition of the Paris Air Show.
