Lufthansa opts against stake in Air Europa, follows Air France-KLM exit: Reuters
Lufthansa Group has walked away from talks to buy a stake in the Spanish airline Air Europa, according to Reuters.
The decision comes just days after Air France-KLM made a similar decision to end any further negotiations regarding an investment in the airlines.
“After thorough analysis and intensive negotiations, we have decided against taking a stake in Air Europa at this time,” a spokesperson for Lufthansa told Reuters.
The Hidalgo family, though their Globalia travel consortium, are currently the largest stakeholder (80%) of Air Europa’s shares. International Airlines Group (IAG) own 20%.
Turkish Airlines are understood to still be in discussions with Air Europa and are now seen as the leading contender to secure an investment.
Martin Leber / ShutterstockTurkish Airlines confirmed in June 2025, that it is holding “non-binding discussions” with Air Europa over investment opportunities.
On July 31, 2025, CEO of Air France-KLM, Benjamin Smith announced that the group had “ended the discussions” with Air Europa.
It was reported that Air France-KLM pulled out of the process due to an inability to come to an agreement with Globalia, resulting in the final withdrawal of the process.
According to el Economista, the Franco-Dutch airline group proposed a $347 million (€300 million) investment for a 51% stake in Air Europa.
Interested parties were asked to register binding bids by July 2025.
