Korean Air and Delta launch remote baggage screening on Incheon–Atlanta route
Korean Air and Delta Air Lines have partnered in a transpacific joint venture to make travel easier and more convenient for its passengers flying from Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).
The venture, called the International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS), will transmit X-ray screenings of baggage from Seoul to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for remote review before the flight from South Korea arrives.
This eliminates the need for passengers to collect and recheck bags upon arrival in the US. Korean Air said that this will reduce connection times by approximately 20 minutes, not to mention removing one of the most stressful parts of international travel.
The South Korean flag carrier said that its customers will have smoother connections – especially going through ATL, which was named the world’s busiest airport in 2024.
This will also eliminate queues for baggage recheck or customs and checked bags will automatically be transferred to the final destination.
When passengers arrive at their first point of entry in the US, they can head directly to the next flight.
The airline said that IRBS applies not only to nonstop ICN–ATL passengers but also to those starting their journey in other cities and connecting via Incheon Airport.
According to Korean Air, IRBS is expected to have a significant impact on travel, with nearly 300,000 passengers flying the Incheon to Atlanta route each year. More than half connect to onward flights via Atlanta. In 2024, 67,000 of 123,000 Korean Air passengers and more than 100,000 of 160,000 Delta passengers transited through Atlanta Airport.
“Together with Delta and our partners, we are introducing new initiatives to deliver a seamless passenger experience,” said Kwangho Ko, Senior Vice President at Korean Air.
Ko added: “We will continue to deploy services to maximize convenience and comfort for our customers.”
