Aeroflot cancels dozens of flights after massive cyberattack
Russian flag carrier Aeroflot cancelled dozens of flights on July 28, 2025, after what appears to be a large-scale cyberattack.
Government-owned news agency TASS, quoting the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia, stated that several of the airline’s internal IT systems had been brought down by hackers and that a criminal investigation had been launched.
In parallel to these events, groups of Ukrainian and Belarusian hackers posted statements online claiming responsibility for the attacks.
According to these hackers, the breach was the result of many months of work and many of the airline’s systems have been penetrated. These include Aeroflot’s reservations and CRM system as well as a number of back-office software applications. The hackers also claimed to have retrieved a large amount of data from these systems, which they pledged to make available to other parties. In the same statement, the hackers also implied that they had obtained the personal password of Aeroflot’s CEO, claiming it had not been changed since 2022.
The cyberattack, which some reports claim has also impaired Aeroflot’s ability to refuel its aircraft, has caused massive disruption at Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), the airline’s main hub, during one of the peak summer season days.
Aeroflot has requested that affected passengers return home, as it is currently unable to rebook passengers or issue refunds. The airline has said that alternatives, either in the form of refunds or rebookings, will be made available within the next 10 days.
