Airbus wins Vietravel order for 50 jets, MOU with Vietnam Airlines for A350s
Airbus has secured an order from Vietravel Airlines for 50 aircraft, as well as signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Vietnam Airlines for five A350-900s.
On September 10, 2026, President To Lam and French President Emmanuel Macron held a summit meeting in Paris to strengthen relationships and pursue new areas of economic, trade and investment cooperation.
As part of the summit at Élysée Palace, Vietravel signed an agreement to purchase 50 Airbus aircraft, including 20 A220s and 30 A321s.
Founded in 2020, the six-year-old carrier has said that it expects the order to include both A321neo and A321XLR aircraft variants, with deliveries expected to start in 2029.
Vietravel AirlinesVietjet explained that the “simultaneous selection” of the A220 and A321neo reflected its “long-term vision for network development”.
The A220 will be used to “pioneer new direct air connections to cities and regions that previously lacked regular direct flights or had limited air accessibility”.
The A321neos will be deployed on routes with higher demand, enabling Vietravel to expand operations to longer international routes.
Do Quang Hien, the founder and CEO of T&T Group which owns Vietravel, and Wouter van Wersch, the chairman of Airbus International, both attended the summit to sign off the deal.
“The plan to add 50 Airbus aircraft is the next step in Vietravel Airlines’ transformation roadmap since joining the T&T Group ecosystem at the end of 2024,” Vietravel Airlines announced. “From consolidating resources and gradually increasing the proportion of owned aircraft – starting with the first Airbus A321 in June 2025 – Vietravel Airlines is moving into a long-term fleet planning phase, expanding its flight network and enhancing its proactive operational capabilities.”
Vietravel plans to continue adding aircraft during the second half of 2026. According to ch-aviation data, the carrier currently operates four A321-200s and a single A320-200.
Vietnam Airlines set to invest in additional A350-900s
In Paris, Vietnam Airlines also announced that an MoU had been signed with Airbus for the proposed sale of five Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with deliveries expected between 2033 and 2034.
According to the airline, this agreement marks an “important milestone in Vietnam-France aviation cooperation” and it “supports Vietnam Airlines’ long-term strategy to strengthen its long-haul operating capabilities beyond 2030”.
As part of Vietnam Airlines’ fleet development plan, the company identified the acquisition of 30 widebody aircraft beyond 2030 as a strategic priority.
Vietnam Airlines A spokesperson for the carrier said: “The investment is intended to support the rapid growth of international travel demand, expand the airline’s capacity to serve medium and long-haul routes, and further strengthen the competitiveness of Vietnam’s national flag carrier.”
Currently, Vietnam Airlines operates 14 A350-900 widebody aircraft and 16 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, as part of its long-haul fleet.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Executive Vice President of Sales for Commercial Aircraft, said: “We believe that the A350-900, with its long-haul capabilities and operational efficiency, can support Vietnam Airlines’ plans to expand its international network in the years ahead.”
