Alaska Airlines back in operation after brief IT outage grounds entire fleet
Alaska Airlines has announced that it is back in operation following a brief nationwide IT outage that grounded all of its flights.
In a statement on X, released on July 21, 2025, the airline confirmed that it has fixed its earlier IT outage and has resumed normal operations. The outage appeared to have continued for approximately three hours.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and encourage guests to check your flight status before heading to the airport,” the carrier statement read.
The airline officially confirmed the outage in an earlier statement, noting that the outage, which started around 20:00 local time on July 20, 2025, and had caused a temporary, system-wide ground stop for both Alaska Airlines and Air Horizon flights. Horizon Air is a subsidiary of Alaska Air Group, primarily serving the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the situation on its website, stating that a ground stop had affected all Alaska mainline aircraft.
Alaska Airlines said the ground stop was lifted at 23:00 local time on July 20, 2025, and operations for both airlines resumed. However, the airline also warned that “there will most likely be residual impacts to flights.”
“It will take some time to get our overall operations back to normal,” the airline added. Alaska Airlines did not specify the reason for the IT outage.
According to flight tracking website FlightAware, on July 20, 2025, Alaska Airlines cancelled 66 flights and delayed 308. At the time of writing on July 21, 2025, the airline logged 54 flight cancellations and 49 delays.
CNN reported that the ground stop left some passengers stuck on aircraft for hours. Additionally, videos shared on X showed hundreds of passengers stranded at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA) waiting for their flights.
