Amsterdam Schiphol welcomes new services by IndiGo and Oman Air
July 2, 2025 turned out to be an eventful day for Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). The Dutch gateway welcomed two new airlines, Indian low-cost airline IndiGo and Omani flag carrier Oman Air.
The arrival of both inaugural flights, from Mumbai (BOM) and Muscat (MCT), respectively, was marked with the traditional water cannon salute.

These aircraft have been partly painted in IndiGo’s livery, while preserving the Norwegian carrier’s colors on the tail. IndiGo operates this aircraft with a 338-seat, two class configuration, with 56 “Stretch” business class seats and 282 in economy.
The launch of this thrice-weekly service to the Netherlands, together with the start of a similar service between Mumbai and Manchester (MAN) on July 1, 2025, represents quite an important milestone for IndiGo, as it is its first foray in Western Europe.
The Indian carrier’s presence in Europe was previously limited to a service to Istanbul, operated in partnership with Turkish Airlines. However, this connection is now in question following the souring of relations between India and Turkey after the latter aligned with Pakistan during the recent border conflict.
The new route to Amsterdam will also facilitate connectivity between IndiGo and Dutch carrier KLM, with which the Indian airline has a comprehensive codeshare agreement.
IndiGo has ambitious plans to expand its international footprint and reach out well beyond its closest geographical regions. This willingness to become a more global player was underlined by CEO, Pieter Elbers during the 81st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), who announced that IndiGo was doubling its order for Airbus A350 widebody aircraft, from 30 to 60.
During the same event, Elbers also detailed IndiGo’s long-term international expansion strategy in an interview with AeroTime.
Oman Air looks again at Europe
Oman Air’s service in turn will operate four times a week and, just like IndiGo’s, will be operated by Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
The launch of the Amsterdam service, which was announced in April 2025, has materialized just one day after the Omani flag carrier formally joined the oneworld alliance.

The launch of new long-haul routes can also be seen as a vote of confidence in the future of the airline. For more than a year, the Omani carrier has been involved in a rather comprehensive restructuring that has seen the airline shed part of its fleet and a number of non-core routes and reduce its workforce numbers in order to return to profitability.
