ANA to offer Viasat’s high-speed free internet to all international passengers
All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced on August 5, 2025, that it will be offering free high-speed Wi-Fi across all classes of service onboard most of its international flights.
This internet connectivity service will be provided by US satellite operator Viasat through the deployment of its new Amara platform.
Viasat’s Amara, which was unveiled in April 2025, is a multi-network, multi-orbit solution which can be accessed through a single antenna and is expected to be able to deliver streaming-quality internet speeds onboard aircraft.
The Japanese carrier will start rolling out the new system on its B767-300ER, which it uses on short- and medium-haul flights within Asia. The first six aircraft of the type will be equipped in the fiscal year 2026, which starts in April 2026 in Japan.
ANA also intends to retrofit 19 B787-9 aircraft within the same fiscal period, as well as install the high-speed internet service on 18 of the new B777-9 aircraft. The latter rollout timeline will be contingent upon Boeing managing to gain certification for this new aircraft type and the fulfillment of the expected delivery timelines.
This rollout plan envisages that more than 80% of ANA’s international fleet will be equipped with high-speed internet connectivity by 2030.
With this move, ANA has become the latest in a number of large airlines that have pledged to offer high-speed internet to all passengers for free in the near future. Many of these, such as Air France, Qatar Airways and American Airlines, have opted for SpaceX Starlink, but incumbent satellite operators, as is the case of Viasat, are also updating their offering to compete with Elon Musk’s firm.
