Australian Army a step closer to receiving first AH-64E Apache helicopters
The first four of Australia’s 29 AH-64E Apache helicopters are a step closer to being delivered to Australian Defence by the end of 2025.
Australian Defence took to social media to share images of the four helicopters in the final assembly stage at Boeing’s facility in Mesa, Arizona.
The AH-64Es are set to replace Australia’s Eurocopter Tiger, Airbus’ four-blade, twin engine attack service helicopter which first entered Australian Army service in 2004.
The Australian Army intends to fully replace the Tiger helicopters by 2028. The army claims the aircraft is beset with a number of issues, the latest of which was a “hard landing” incident during the Talisman Sabre exercises in July 2025.
According to Australian Defence, the Apaches bring “significant capability improvements that will enhance the lethality and tempo of land and amphibious forces.”
The AH-64E is the most modern configuration of the Apache. Australia said it will provide critical attack aviation effects, consisting of: reconnaissance, communications, firepower and offensive support to the integrated force.
“The AH-64E Apache is the most contemporary and capable attack helicopter in the world,” said Jeremy King, Head of Joint Aviation Systems Division Major General.
“It allows us to continue to develop attack helicopter operations, armed reconnaissance helicopter operations, communications networking and, importantly, the ability to grow the teaming of crewed and uncrewed systems as we learn the lessons of modern warfare in the current environment,” King added.
The AH-64E Apache will be operated by 1st Aviation Regiment in Townsville once it is introduced into service. The Apache configuration will align with the United States Army, which expects to operate its AH-64E fleet until the middle of this century.
