Australia’s black box flight recorder to feature on Royal Australian Mint coin

The black box flight recorder, invented by Australian defense scientist David Warren in the 1950s, will appear on a new commemorative coin from the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian Department of Defence announced on October 7, 2026.

The black box flight recorder is one of five Australian inventions featured in the Mint’s “Bright Ideas” coin collection, which goes on sale on October 8, 2026.

The others are the jaffle maker, the stump-jump plough, the baby safety capsule and wireless local area network (WLAN) technology.

A personal connection to aviation safety

Warren’s interest in electronics started in childhood, when he began building radios after learning to use a crystal set from his father. His father was killed in 1934 in one of Australia’s earliest air disasters.

Years later, while working at the Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Melbourne, Warren took part in the investigation into a series of crashes involving the de Havilland Comet, the world’s first jet-powered commercial airliner. At the time, investigators had little information to explain why the aircraft had crashed.

Warren recalled seeing a miniature recorder at a trade fair and came up with the idea of a device that could continuously record flight data and cockpit voices.

From rejected idea to global standard

The concept initially drew little interest, so Warren designed and built an experimental recorder himself to prove it worked. His idea was eventually adopted, and modern versions of the device are now installed on passenger aircraft around the world.

After an accident, data from flight recorders helps investigators understand what happened. The findings are used to improve aircraft design, refine operating procedures and prevent similar accidents.

Honored at home, but still less known than his invention

The headquarters of Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group in Canberra is named after Warren, and his life story has been told in a theater production. Even so, the Department of Defence noted that his name remains less widely known than his invention.

Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro said the coin recognizes Warren’s legacy and the role of Australian science in improving safety worldwide.

“Few Australian inventions have had such a profound impact on global safety as the black box flight recorder,” Monro said.

More than six decades after Warren built his first prototype, the flight recorder remains one of the most important tools in aviation safety, and is now set to be remembered in Australia’s wallets as well as its skies. The post Australia’s black box flight recorder to feature on Royal Australian Mint coin appeared first on AeroTime.
