Avelo Airlines to close Hollywood Burbank base, citing poor financial returns
US low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines has announced that it will be closing its hub at Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) in Los Angeles, stating that the current operating conditions will not deliver “adequate financial returns”.
“This was not an easy decision,” the airline’s CEO Andrew Levy said in a statement. “Our company’s deepest operational roots are in BUR, having launched our first flight there over four years ago during the COVID pandemic.”
The airline announced that on August 12, 2025, it will cut back operations at BUR to one aircraft before completely exiting with the remaining aircraft on December 2, 2025, and closing the base.
Avelo noted that decisions like this are rarely based on a single factor, and this case is “no different”.
“We believe the continuation of service from BUR in the current operating environment will not deliver adequate financial returns in a highly competitive backdrop,” Levy continued.
The carrier said it intends to redeploy BUR aircraft to business areas with “more efficient longer-term growth prospects,” while also “building depth and breadth” to the airline’s East Coast operation.
“Customers who have flights booked can visit the Manage Trips section of our website to cancel their flight and receive a refund,” Levy concluded in his statement.
Currently the airline operates from Tweed-New Haven Airport in Connecticut, Wilmington Airport (ILG) serving the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley area, Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), Sonoma County Airport (STS) in the Bay Area, and Lakeland International Airport (LAL) in Central Florida.
In April 2025, the airline launched a new base at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) in North Carolina.
