Boca Raton Cessna 310 crash: what we know so far
A privately-owned Cessna 310 twin-engine light aircraft crashed in Boca Raton, Florida, on April 11, 2025, killing all three onboard, reportedly, members of the same family. A fourth person was injured on the ground.
The aircraft (registration N8930N) departed Boca Raton Airport (BCT) at around 10.20am local time, bound for Tallahassee International Airport (TLH), Florida and crashed very shortly after, while still in the vicinity of its departure airport.
While it is still not known with absolute certainty what caused this tragic accident, the flight pattern moments before the crash, with the aircraft flying in circles near Boca Raton Airport appears to indicate some issue with flight controls.
According to some reports, communications between the pilot and air traffic control suggest the former had accidentally left a rudder lock on before take-off and was struggling to keep control of the aircraft. The circular flight pattern was due to the pilot trying to burn fuel before attempting an emergency landing.
We heard it all on the coms. Rudder lock accidentally left on. He tried but couldn’t get control. Last transmission was resignation saying he just didn’t know what to do to fix it. Tragic.— Skye Hawk (@SkyeHawk23) April 11, 2025Unfortunately, the aircraft went down shortly after, disappearing in a ball of fire and smoke as it hit the ground on the side of I-95 motorway. The blast affected also a vehicle on the ground, the occupant of which suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The driver reportedly crashed his car on a tree while trying to avoid the burning debris.
Motorway I-95 had to be closed and Tri-Rail train service, suspended, while emergency services were on the scene, heavily impacting north-south connectivity on Florida’s east coast.
The crash was recorded on video by several bystanders, who have posted footage online.
