Boeing lands second Gulf order from Trump tour as Etihad buys 28 new jets
US manufacturer Boeing has secured its second aircraft order linked directly to US President Donald Trump’s four-day tour of the Persian Gulf.
After President Trump landed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on May 15, 2024, the White House announced that Etihad Airways, one of the country’s flag carriers, had placed an order for 28 widebody aircraft.
Under the $14.5 billion agreement, Etihad has agreed to purchase a mix of Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 777Xs, powered by GE Aerospace engines.
A spokesperson for the White House said: “With the inclusion of the next generation 777X in its fleet plan, the investment deepens the longstanding commercial aviation partnership between the UAE and the United States, fueling American manufacturing, driving exports, and supporting 60,000 U.S. jobs.”
According to Reuters, on May 16, 2025, Etihad highlighted that the new aircraft reflected its “ongoing approach to aligning its fleet with evolving network and operational needs”.
President Trump’s four-day trip to the Gulf concludes on May 16, 2025, after him having spent time in Saudia Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.
While visiting Abu Dhabi, President Trump claimed the US had secured over $200 billion in commercial deals with Qatar, “bringing the total of investment agreements in the Gulf region to over $2 trillion”.
On May 14, 2025, Qatar Airways completed the largest ever Boeing widebody order after purchasing 130 787 Dreamliners and 30 777-9s, with options for 50 more aircraft.
Qatar Airways CEO, Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “This is a critical next step for Qatar Airways on our path as we invest in the cleanest, youngest and most efficient fleet in global aviation. This is so we can meet the strong demand in the airline as we seamlessly connect passengers to the world better than anyone.”
