Boeing restarts production of best-selling 737 MAX jetliners: Reuters
Boeing has restarted the production of its best-selling 737 MAX jetliners, a month after a seven-week strike ended, according to Reuters, which cited three sources close to the matter.
One source, who wished to remain anonymous, told Reuters that production resumed on December 6, 2024.
According to its order book, Boeing currently has around unfilled 4,800 orders for 737 MAX jetliners from airlines.
In a previous interview published on December 4, 2024, Mike Whitaker, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator, told Reuters that production of the 737 MAX was set to resume in December 2024.
Production was paused due to a strike involving 33,000 Boeing workers on the US West Coast, which started on September 13, 2024, and lasted until November 5, 2024. This strike affected the production of Boeing’s 737, 787 and 777 aircraft.
Additionally, the FAA set a limit on Boeing 737 MAX production to 38 aircraft each month following an incident in January 2024, when a door plug separated from an Alaska Airlines 737-9 shortly after takeoff.
On January 24, 2024, the FAA told Boeing that it would not allow any production expansion of the MAX jets, including the 737 MAX 9. After the door plug incident Whitaker said that “this won’t be back to business as usual for Boeing”.
“We will not agree to any request from Boeing for an expansion in production or approve additional production lines for the 737 MAX until we are satisfied that the quality control issues uncovered during this process are resolved,” Whitaker said.
Following his recent visit to the Renton production facility, Whitaker told Reuters that new systems and training in place at Boeing were “really what I expected to see.”
