British Airways 777 returns to Heathrow after emergency descent over Irish Sea
A British Airways Boeing 777 bound for Chicago returned to London Heathrow Airport on October 5, 2026, after a reported loss of cabin pressure prompted an emergency descent over the Irish Sea.
Flight BA295, operated by a 777-200ER registered G-VIIA, was cruising at 36,000 feet about 40 nautical miles south of Dublin when the crew began descending. Passenger oxygen masks deployed, and the aircraft leveled off at 9,000 feet about seven minutes later, according to an incident report carried by AeroInside.
British Airways confirmed that the aircraft returned following a technical issue and landed safely. Photographs from inside the cabin showed oxygen masks hanging above passengers’ seats.
“Customers disembarked the aircraft normally and our teams are working to get their travel plans back on track as quickly as possible,” an airline spokesperson said.
The crew transmitted the emergency transponder code 7700 before returning toward London. Flight-tracking reports showed the aircraft spending an extended period circling near southwestern Britain before landing at Heathrow later that afternoon. AeroInside reported that the aircraft dumped fuel before returning.
The incident report described a 27,000-foot descent over approximately seven minutes, averaging about 3,800 feet per minute. Although some early news reports described the aircraft as “plunging,” the available account identifies the maneuver as an emergency descent initiated by the pilots following the pressure loss.
Similar pressurization incidents have prompted emergency descents on other airline flights. In January 2023, a Kenya Airways Boeing 737 deployed passenger oxygen masks and descended to 10,000 feet before landing safely in Mombasa. In February 2024, an Indonesia AirAsia A320 experienced pressurization problems on two consecutive days, prompting emergency descents on both flights. No injuries were reported in those incidents. The post British Airways 777 returns to Heathrow after emergency descent over Irish Sea appeared first on AeroTime.
