Britten-Norman conducts momentous Islander maiden flight
Planemaker Britten-Norman is celebrating the maiden test flight of the first Islander aircraft built in the UK since full production returned to British shores in 2023.
On September 3, 2026, Britten-Norman confirmed that the first Islander to come off the new production line on the Isle of Wight had taken to the skies.
“It is the first aircraft to come off our new production line, with the airframe built up here on the Isle of Wight from detail components,” Britten-Norman declared. “For the teams at Bembridge, watching it climb away this afternoon was the culmination of three years of work.”
Only eight days earlier, the company announced that it had started ground testing the first Islander after the aircraft had rolled out at the company’s Isle of Wight facility on July 30, 2026.

Production of the Islander began in the UK in 1967. However, less than a year later, the bulk of manufacturing was moved to Romania to ameliorate production costs and demand.
The Isle of Wight team continued to carry out aircraft completion in the UK. Three years ago, though, Britten-Norman said that the Islander would once again be fully manufactured in Bembridge due to rising costs in Romania.
Islander destined for Falkland Islands
The Islander currently being tested is destined to join the Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGS) fleet.
In June 2026, Britten-Norman announced that a second airframe was nearly 25% complete. In the latest update, the company said that the second airframe is “progressing through the line” and “components for follow-on aircraft are in manufacture”.
The Islander aircraft is a versatile and reliable twin-engine utility aircraft, known for its durability and adaptability. It features a distinctive high-wing design, which provides excellent visibility for both the crew and passengers.
The Islander is used for a wide range of missions, including passenger transport, cargo hauling, surveillance, and search-and-rescue operations. It was also developed into a multi-role military transport aircraft called the Defender.
