China ends Boeing delivery ban after trade tensions with US ease: reports
A ban on Boeing jet deliveries to Chinese customers appears to have temporarily ended after trade tensions between China and the US eased, according to Bloomberg.
The news outlet reported on May 13, 2025, that following an agreement between the US and China to significantly lower tariffs between the two countries Chinese airlines have been told that US-made aircraft arrivals can restart.
On May 12, 2025, a truce between the two economic powerhouses saw the US slash tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30% and China cut tariffs on US imports from 125% to 10%.
The easing of tariffs is set to last for 90 days although there are a small number of imports that are exempt from the reduction included within the agreement.
A bitter tariff war between the two countries broke out after the US announced sweeping tax hikes against dozens of countries, including China on April 2, 2025.
While most countries chose not to retaliate through fear of making the situation worse, China introduced its own set of tariff hikes against US imports.
At least three Boeing made jets scheduled to be delivered to Chinese airlines were returned to the US amid the trade war.
On April 20, 2025, a 737 MAX, registered N230BE, returned from Boeing’s Zhoushan completion center and landed at Boeing Field in Seattle.
A 737 MAX 8, registered N242BE, intended for Xiamen Airlines, also returned to Boeing, after departing from the Zhoushan center.
Several airlines including Air India had shown interested in acquiring any new aircraft rejected by Chinese carriers.
