Crew member breaks leg while preventing attempt to open aircraft door midflight
A cabin crew member on a flight from Madrid (MAD) to Caracas (CCS) broke his leg after taking action to restrain an unruly passenger.
The incident, in which a passenger with signs of mental distress tried to open one of the aircraft’s emergency doors mid-flight, took place on an Airbus A330 aircraft operated by Spanish airline Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas on March 5, 2025.
According to media reports, prior to the attempt to open the door, the passenger had been moved to another seat after physically and verbally attacking the passenger in the next seat.
It was right after this first incident that the passenger stood up and ran towards the emergency door and attempted to open it. Crew members, assisted by several other passengers, then rushed to restrain the unruly passenger, and a scuffle ensued in which the flight attendant fractured a bone in the lower leg.
The incident was captured on camera by several passengers. A video clip and images were later posted on social media.
After restraining the unruly passenger on the ground and tying him down, the aircraft landed safely in Caracas, where he was handed over to the authorities. The injured crew member has been granted several weeks of sick leave while he recovers from the fracture.
The airline issued a statement praising the conduct of the crew, highlighting that at no point was the safety of the passengers or the aircraft in danger. The post Crew member breaks leg while preventing attempt to open aircraft door midflight appeared first on AeroTime.
