Delta pulls over 100 aircraft for inspection after massive storm hits Atlanta
Delta Air Lines had to pull more than 100 aircraft for inspection after a massive hailstorm hit Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), the busiest airport in the United States and Delta’s main hub, on the evening of June 27, 2025.
According to the airline, these inspections were conducted all through the night and had already been completed by the morning of June 28, 2025.
The effects of the severe storms that hit the Atlanta area reverberated across the entire Delta Air Lines network, resulting in the cancellation of some 380 flights. The airline struggled to reposition aircraft and crews as a result of the disruption experienced at its main hub airport.
To put this figure in perspective, according to the Cirium SRS Analyzer, more than 2,400 flights were scheduled to operate to or from Atlanta on Friday 27, 2025, and over 2,000 on Friday 28, 2025. Of these, the vast majority (959 in each direction) were scheduled by Delta Air Lines.
In addition to thunderstorms, hail and flooding in some areas, the winds were so strong that the air traffic control tower at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport had to be evacuated for nearly an hour and a half (between 7.11pm and 8.30pm), adding to the mayhem.
In an official statement published on its website, Delta Air Lines apologized to passengers for the severe disruption, while praising ground crews which operated around the clock to restore service. The airline also warned that some delays and cancellations may still occure throughout the weekend, as the situation returns to normal.
