Elixir Aircraft gains Part 23 certification from FAA, opening door to US market
Elixir Aircraft has obtained Part 23 certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), making it possible for the French aircraft maker to commercialize its two-seater trainer aircraft in the US market.
Part 23 applies to normal category aircraft for up to 19 passengers and a maximum takeoff weight of 19,000 pounds (8,618 kg).
Based in the French Atlantic city of La Rochelle, Elixir Aircraft has developed a fourth-generation light aircraft which is built using mostly lightweight composite materials. The airframe and many of the aircraft’s structural elements are produced following the OneShot process, which minimizes the number of components to be assembled.
The design of the Elixir Aircraft trainer aircraft has been inspired by the techniques and principles used in the competitive sailing industry, something, which, the company’s founders claim, gives it a significant edge when it comes to its performance and fuel efficiency.
Elixir Aircraft obtained the equivalent CS-23 certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in 2020, and several dozen aircraft are already in service with European flight schools.
Accessing the US market, however, will be the biggest prize for Elixir Aircraft, since it is by far the largest market for flight training and general aviation in the world.
Elixir Aircraft has already established an industrial and commercial roll out plan for the US, where it has already registered orders for more than 100 aircraft from flight schools in Florida and Arizona.
The French firm is setting up a re-assembly and customer service center at Sarasota Bradenton Airport (SRQ) in Florida, which is expected to become, at a later stage, a second aircraft assembly line, supplementing the one it already has in La Rochelle.
The announcement was made during the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh air show, which is taking place in Wisconsin, between July 21 and 27, 2025.
