Eritrea bans Ethiopian Airlines flights citing ‘malicious trading practices’
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in Eritrea has informed Ethiopian Airlines that flights to the East African nation will be suspended from September 30, 2024.
In a social media post, Ethiopian Airlines said it had received notice from Eritrean CAA about the suspension on July 21, 2024, but had not been advised why and was “seeking clarification”.
A document shared on social media purporting to be written by the Eritrean CAA, said that Ethiopian Airlines had conducted “persistent malicious trading practices”.
The CAA also said Ethiopian Airlines was responsible for “luggage theft, pilferage, damage, prolonged delays and loss with no compensation”.
In addition, the aviation authority cited “unjustified and unwarranted price hikes and other irregularities witnessed”.

“In light of all that, all Ethiopian Airlines travelers destined to the State of Eritrea are hereby, advised to adjust their flights and subsequently, look for other options as appropriate,” the Eritrean CAA said.
Ethiopian Airlines said that the carrier is “committed to resolving any issues amicably and promptly” and asked for customers’ “understanding and patience”.
Flights between Ethiopia and Eritrea restarted in 2018 after a 20-year absence due to conflicts between the two countries.
AeroTime has approached Ethiopian Airlines for comment. AeroTime was unable to establish the authenticity of the document reportedly written by the Eritrean CAA and shared online.
