Finnair launches daily A350 service on Helsinki–Melbourne route via Bangkok

Finnair has launched daily flights between Helsinki Airport (HEL) and Melbourne Airport (MEL) via Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), adding Australia to its own scheduled network for the first time.

The inaugural flight, AY145, departed Helsinki on October 25, 2026, at 01:15 local time on Airbus A350-900 OH-LWO. It was scheduled to arrive in Melbourne at 07:20 local time on October 26, after a total journey of 22 hours and five minutes.

The year-round service includes a stopover of just under two hours in Bangkok. Passengers stay with the same aircraft for the whole journey but must leave the cabin during the stop. Each sector can also be booked on its own, which gives Finnair access to the Thailand–Australia market through its Bangkok–Melbourne flights.

A year-round market Finnair was looking for

Finnair said it chose Melbourne after looking for a long-haul destination that could sustain demand all year. According to the airline’s network planning team, many of the other options it considered depended heavily on either the summer or winter season.

Melbourne stood out for its mix of leisure and business travel, its large European community, and its international students and expatriate workers.

The schedule is built around connections. Leaving Helsinki after midnight gets passengers to Australia the following morning. The return flight departs Melbourne in the afternoon and lands in Helsinki early in the morning, in time for onward European departures.

The A350 offers Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins, with Finnair’s AirLounge seats in Business Class.

Under two hours on the ground in Bangkok

Finnair said the launch followed months of preparation, including safety and risk assessments, cost analysis, aeronautical charts, operational guidance and the selection of alternate airports. The airline paid particular attention to the risk of volcanic ash because the route passes over volcanic regions. It plans to refine its operational guidance as it gains experience from the first flights.

The Bangkok stop is needed because of both the aircraft’s range and crew duty limits. Passengers continuing to Melbourne leave the aircraft with all their hand luggage and go through security screening before returning to the gate. Their travel documents and hand luggage are then checked again under Australian requirements.

In less than two hours, the aircraft is turned around for the next sector. The cabin crew changes, a local mechanic inspects the aircraft, and ground teams clean the cabin, refuel and load meals. Cargo for Thailand is unloaded and new shipments are loaded. The cabin and cargo hold are also treated with the insecticide required by Australian authorities.

Planning for fatigue across multiple time zones

For pilots, the route involves a rotation of about one week with four long-haul flights. This includes about a day in Bangkok in each direction and two days in Melbourne. Augmented crews of three or four pilots allow rest breaks during the flights. Finnair said fatigue management is particularly important because of the long sectors, varying departure times and the number of time zones crossed.

The onboard service has also been adapted to the long journey. Finnair plans meal times around departure and arrival times and passengers’ expected needs, to allow longer, uninterrupted periods for sleep. Passengers can order food and drinks to their seats through the inflight entertainment screen, and cabin crew regularly offer water and blueberry juice.

The airline’s new catering base in Bangkok has been stocked with 18,000 liters of Finnair’s signature blueberry juice, enough for about three months. The menu also includes some Australian touches: Economy Class passengers flying from Melbourne to Bangkok are served a Tim Tam chocolate biscuit with their meal.

Linking cargo markets in Europe, Asia and Australia

Cargo between Europe, Asia and Australia is an important part of the route’s commercial potential. In the initial phase, however, Finnair Cargo will not accept pharmaceuticals, perishables or other temperature-sensitive shipments for the full Helsinki–Melbourne journey.

These shipments may be accepted on individual sectors, subject to the applicable requirements. Any expansion will depend on the results of temperature assessments across the whole route.
