Flair Airlines ends Nashville flights amid rising US-Canada political tensions
Canadian ultra-low-cost carrier Flair Airlines has ended flights to Nashville in the United States amid rising political tensions between the two countries.
On March 18, 2025, Kim Bowie, Director of Communications at Flair Airlines, confirmed to WKRN News 2 that “Flair won’t be flying to Nashville this summer.”
The airline has canceled its direct service between Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). According to the airline’s official website, the service was its only flight to Nashville, and Toronto Airport was the only airport in Flair’s network serving Tennessee.
During a meeting of the Tennessee House Finance, Ways and Means Committee on March 17, 2025, Department of Tourist Development Commissioner Mark Ezell said it is a loss of approximately 18,000 seats, according to WKRN News 2.
“We see travelers quickly react to political news and then we see that great marketing overcomes that traveler settlement,” Ezell said during the meeting.
Ezell added that the department is worried about Flair’s flight cancellations to Nashville. However, he argued that the state can navigate these challenges “because of Tennessee’s great assets.”
The relationship between Canadians and their US neighbors has become increasingly tense since the election of US President Donald Trump. On February 1, 2025, Trump implemented a 25% extra tariff on Canadian imports and a 10% tariff on energy products from Canada.
According to the White House, Trump took this step to hold Canada “accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs” from entering the US.
According to data from AeroRoutes, a website reporting on worldwide airline network changes, Air Canada, the largest airline in Canada, will be cutting back on flights to Florida, Los Angeles, Miami, and Orlando.
Additionally, Porter Airlines told the National Post it is scaling back its advertising of US destinations because “some Canadians may view this negatively.” Canadian low-cost carrier Sunwing Airlines has reportedly ceased all of its flights to the US, and Air Transat has reduced its flight capacity to the country.
